Hidden Gem of St. John’s: Amazing food and phenomenal service priced just right. I have stayed in the Sheraton in St. John’s probably 30 times and never have I bothered to try the in house restaurant. Not because it looked bad, it looked very nice but I think I just wanted to stretch my legs and check out the town and to be honest hotel restaurants are often good but not great. One night I couldn’t seem to get a table anywhere due to a conference in town so I walked back to the hotel and had a seat in the quiet and classy Oppidan at the Sheraton. My first observation was that the servers were professional and well trained, they hit every note that I would expect in a fine dining establishment. Secondly the menu was fairly safe but diverse and appealing. Things were off to a good start. After some light reading the very friendly waitress took my order and then left me to enjoy the atmosphere and a glass of wine. I was soon pleasantly surprised by the delivery of amuse-bouche, something I had never seen in St. John’s (well fine, maybe at Raymond’s but really you pay for it there). Things were getting even better. Then my seafood chowder came, or maybe it would be better called seafood stew. It had huge chunks of cod and salmon alongside massive scallops (there were at least 6 scallops) and it was all so fresh. It was possibly some of the best seafood I have had on the east coast. I was almost entirely satisfied on the soup/stew alone. But after taking away my bowl I was again surprised by the waitress returning shortly after with a palate cleanser, a delicious lemon sorbet served in a wine glass. It was delicious and did exactly what it was meant to while also satisfying my sweet tooth. By this point I was already blown away, and then I received my main and things continued to get better. A spinach and beet salad (spent all the calories on the soup) that was fresh and delicious, exactly what I was after. Overall my experience at Oppidan was phenomenal and I will surely be back again. If you are in St. John’s and looking for fine dining that I think is on par with Raymond’s then come here, the food and service combined is just as good and cost is much less. Give it a try.
