All-around good lunch joint. Very cozy atmosphere, quick and friendly service, and delicious classic food made for a very enjoyable lunch. We had the half sandwich (smoked meat) with borscht (a sweet tomato base with cabbage and tender pieces of meat) and a Reuben (outstanding!) with house salad (nothing fancy but very fresh and not too much dressing). The Reuben is worth coming back for. Our big regret is being too stuffed to try their carrot cake.30 Sep, 2014Reuben. Foist, V’eel Eat!. My husband and I, who are great fans of New York deli, and who mourned the lack of good deli in Halifax, were beyond delighted when Hali Deli opened it’s door! We were not disappointed. Well, we WERE disappointed about one thing: NO ICE. We are both lovers of sodas with lots of ice, but Victor explained about the lack of space and the iffy connections, and we were so happy with the food that we gave the ice a pass. I love a good chicken + matzoh ball soup, and while I always ask them to leave out the carrot slices, the broth is rich and complex, and the matzoh is delicious. I have also had the amazing tuna-on-an-onion-bun, the superlative Reuben, the uber-crunchy fries, the remarkable smoked meat sandwich, AND (saving the best for last) the astounding melt-in-your-gob brisket (sandwich or dinner), the onion gravy, the knish, the MILKSHAKES, the heartbreakingly good potato salad, the… well, I could go on for a while yet, but I sense you fumbling for your wallet and re-checking the address. Go! GO!
Awesome!. Loved the atmosphere and the food! The soups were lovely, and the portions were quite large. The whole place is just adorable. I will definitely be back.
Interested to know if I was there on an off day … The corned beef was so tough a blowtorch couldn’t cut it …. Smoked meat was ok … Having been to Caplansky’s in Toronto … I expect a little more … I want to like this place as its a great idea but I only give it 3 out of 5
