Best Fish and Chips I Could Find. On a recent three-week visit to the Maritimes, I ate fish and chips at least once a day, including at most of the places that were said to be famous for the dish. Most of these meals were mediocre to bad (greasy fish, over-battered fish, over-cooked fish, frozen French fries, greasy/soggy/raw/burnt French fries, etc). The fare at Fries & Co. was not only the best I found, but extremely good in its own right. The home cooked fries were golden and perfectly crisped. The large pieces of lightly battered haddock golden and flaky. All of it delicious. The portions are very large. A two-piece with fries could easily feed two very hungry adults (I am ashamed to admit that I ate one of these all by myself as it was so good). On the downside, the location (on a busy thoroughfare) is poor (very limited street parking on the adjacent side street), and the interior of the restaurant is neither attractive nor comfortable (a few wooden booths distributed awkwardly over two floors of an old house). The service, however, though homey, was super fast and super friendly. Go for the food. You won’t be disappointed.
What happened to Fries and Co. The last time I ordered from Fries and Co I was surprised to see the new menu. The fish I received was so greasy with the smell of rancid oil. The old fish and chips I craved was no longer there.I actually took the time to write a letter but did not get an answer. What’s up?
For some odd reason some people think Fish and Chips are supposed to be dripping with fat & grease including this place. Bring towels to soak up the fat off the mushy fries and thick battered and doughy fish. You won’t feel like eating anything else foe days. Freddie’s Fantastic Fishhouse in Bayer’s Lake is not that far by car and worth the drive.
