Great Seafood. Great fish and chips – reasonably priced – friendly staff – a good location – well on its way to becoming a Halifax institution!01 Dec, 2012Good Fishes Dishes. This is a great place for fish…not an easy claim to make in a seaport city! The only downside is that it is very noisey when busy….sound just bounces around the space. But go, nonetheless.

Did something change here?. I saw Phil’s listed in the Coast’s Best of fish and chips category, and being a fish and chips lover, thought I would give it a try. I was completely disappointed (and so were my three friends.) The batter was terrible. It wasn’t a light batter like I would expect, but some sort of breading that may have been overcooked and overpowered the taste of the fish. They were definitely going for a quantity over quality approach. The tartar sauce was equally awful. Not homemade and not even as good as the President’s Choice brand I buy down the street at Superstore. Just a mayonnaise-y bland mixture out of a squeeze-bottle that must have been the cheapest thing they could source. Really, the coleslaw was the only particularly good element of the meal.It was January or early February when I ate here. Another friend went around the same time and felt that it was not nearly as good as on previous visits. Maybe they’ve gotten worse? Maybe it was a bad month? Whatever the reason, there is no way this place is top three, unless you have no taste buds and all you care about is quantity.

When trying to stand out as a sefood resturant located, when you’re located in city on the Atlantic coast, you have to be extremely special. It’s hard to go above and beyond you comparators, but ol’ Phil seems to have found a way. Im not sure how they make their batter, but I would say it is the best I’ve had. They seem to use the perfect amount of batter to compliment there always fresh haddock and it’s cooked perfect every time. There mussels are also great with a rich sauce that really suits everything else I seem to e eating, and must be the cheapest proce for a pound in the city. There fries are hit or miss o find, often not chrispy enough on the outside for my liking. But all in all Phil’s fish and chips are a must try for any haddock lovers in Halifax. With a non-alcoholic drink, tax and tip you’re looking at under 15$

I love their pan fried haddock with an awesome spinach salad. It’s so good I pass up the fries… and I never pass up fries.

My family found this restaurant while we were strolling down Quinpool Road last summer. The fish was lightly battered and not at all greasy. It was served fresh, fast and with a smile. What the dcor lacked, the food more than made up for!
