Nice atmosphere, but disappointing menu. I find it amazing that the irony of this place seems to be lost on its owners. Yes, mennonites did found KW, and yes they are a hardworking bunch. But you know what they are not? Beer drinkers. Mennonites are an extremely religious group of people who do not drink, and I highly doubt that Abraham Erb’s descendents (and others in the mennonite community) are thrilled that he is being used as a gimmick to sell beer. Don’t drink and buggy? Really guys?As far as the place itself – it has a very nice, fun, hipster atmosphere. But I have to say that the menu is sorely lacking. It’s extremely small with very little selection, and on the weekends they do not serve lunch (breakfast only before 3 pm). The menu has also changed since the place opened (it got smaller, amazing since it was already tiny!) and not for the better I would say. It is particularly limited for vegetarians, which is strange considering the hipster demographic they are targeting. The beer is okay, but they need to get their act together on the food if they want to be a place people will frequent.

Surprisingly good vegetarian burger. Abe Erb has a really good vibe. It reminds me of The Works (also in uptown). Its food menu is very limited but that’s understandable. I gave their vegetarian burger a try and it was a hit! It was made of beans and quinoa, I think? It had really good burger seasoning so it tasted like a burger. My visit was good but it could have been great if the services was better. It took the waiter forever to take our order and it took so long for us to get our food.

Disappointed. :(. Not a decent experience at all, terrible service. Such a shame, as it’s a gorgeous place.

Lunch. Good food and great service on a very busy day (Friday). But…there really should be more on the lunch menu than beef and pork. Fish? Chicken? Pasta? Last time I was there I had mussels which were really good, but this has disappeared from the menu. Although I really enjoyed my black bean/quinoa patty, I’m not likely to go back for lunch until the menu has a bit more variety.

Great experience. First time going, went with two friends for drinks on a Friday. Perfect atmosphere, classy and had a good crowd. Really cool overall experience. As a beer lover, I like that they have their own brews, but they also have ‘Guest Brews’ which feature craft beers from other distilleries. The detail and thought that has gone into the dcor is perfect for bringing out the modern/cool side of the Mennonite heritage of this region. I appreciate the unique flavour that brings to a bar in this city as opposed to elsewhere. The calibre of this place is reminiscent of a good bar/restaurant you’d find in Toronto or Chicago.

Abe Erb…Best spot in KW!. I stopped in on their opening day and liked it so much I was back again by the end of the week! The decor is fantastic and it’s obvious a lot of thought went into it. I’m told that there are some great hidden local gems in the bones of it. The bar is apparantly a reclaimed piece from the main beam of the old St. Jacob’s Market. Food was great. Loved the duck fat fries! it’s a small menu but really well put together with readonable prices.Okay…the important part. Beer. I sampled each of their 3 house beers on my first visit and was very pleasantly surprised. Glad I did because by the end of the week they glad run out of all 3! I guess I wasn’t the only fan of Abe Erb brews!will definitely be back again and again. Abe Erb is my new fave place hands down.17 Nov, 2014Cheers to Abe Erb!!!. It is easy to see the careful thought that went into this place. From the cool mirror that looks like the railway tracks run all the way through to the charcoal drawn mural on the wall to the wooden bar (which I’m told was one of the main beams from the burned down St. Jacob’s Farmer’s Market). It’s hard to know what to look at first! The dcor is so well orchestrated. Unique and inviting. It feels like this place belongs there. Right in the heart of uptown Waterloo.I was eager to try their beer and I’m glad I went opening day for a couple pints because when I went back a week later they had sold out of some of their beers! I their first week was well attended ;). I loved every sip of the smooth and light drinking 1857 Koalsh. The Das Spritzhaus (their wheat beer) was tasty too. I’m not personally a fan of IPA beers but I’m told by friends that their Buggywhip is really good. I will definitely try out the 20 Bushels next time. I love that they are making a cider. On my second visit I enjoyed sampling some of their guest taps. I like that they offer those too. It’s nice to see a local business supporting other small brewers. I had the quinoa burger with fries (which I was a little unsure about because they are cooked in duck fat). Turns out…I LOVE duck fat fries…who knew? I’m told that the Abe burger was quite delish with a bit of a kick. I was pleased with the service too. I often stay away from a place when it first opens to let them workout their kinks but I was too excited about this place to stay away. The wait staff was friendly and knew their stuff. It was really busy but they seemed to handle it well.Overall I am just really pumped to have a place like this in Waterloo and based on the crowds of people lining up to try it along with me, I’m not the only one!

Excellent Place. We went on opening day for breakfast. Service was fast and efficient. I had the blueberry pancakes with maple syrup and they were delicious. The others had the Founder’s Breakfast which was 2 eggs, bacon or sausagewith home fries and toast. It was very good. They have self serve coffee. We would all go again.
