As far as Cuban food in Canada goes, there aren’t many places to really go to, even in the metropolis that is Toronto and the GTA. However, Cafe Havana does a pretty damn good job of making me feel like I’m back home in Miami, at least for a little bit. The owners themselves are from Cuba so they know a thing or two about Cuban food. It’s not the same as Miami as regional cuisines do change a bit, so this menu is their take on classic Cuban cuisine.I had to order the Pan Cubano Sandwich, with a croqueta to boot. (Also ordered chicken wings on the side to take back, but ended up eating half there). The Cuban Sandwich, though a bit pricey at $10, is massive. Given the fact that a good portion of Subway sandwiches are close to $10, this is infinitely better. The bread isn’t the bread I’m used to back home, but it was still damn good. Buttery and flaky and warm. The meat is what is more impressive as they really stick as much roasted pork and ham as that bread can hold. Instead of swiss cheese, it was a shredded creamier cheese, which was great. The pickles and mustard are a necessity. The croqueta wasn’t very good to me. Maybe it’s how they are done back in Cuba, but they don’t resemble how they are in Miami. The pork flavor never really stood out, and the filling was more pasty than meaty. The chicken wings were OK. Nothing too special, and I regret not getting a different, more authentic side. The family who is running this place is doing a great job. It’s too bad they are out in Oakville, when I’m sure they would be getting way more exposure downtown. Places like these are hard to come by, so it’s good to get a Cuban meal in when you can. cheatdayeveryday.com
The place is small but the food is really good. Service is personal and amiable, a true reflection of how it feels visiting Cuba. It has options for children as well as those that are not too adventurous with ethnic foods. Smoothies are a must try!
Restaurant is small and was very busy our first few choices were sold out. We ended up choosing the Ropa Vieja to go because it was a tight squeeze in the restaurant. Food was good, tasty. It was a big meal, good enough for lunch tomorrow.
Roasted Pork. Served with Congri and fried plantain.
