We love Chef Wong’s service has been always good, food hot and presented perfectly. You can really tell the owner Philip loves what he does and takes pride in his business. You can see him talking time at all the tables to ensure everything is okay. He will explain the menu to you in as much detail as you would like. Previous reviews say he is too hands and saw it as annoying but it’s nice to see an owner who actually cares for his establishment and wants to see it succeed and value its customers. The lack of positive reviews from other people shows a very busy popular restaurant which of cource may suffer slightly with the volume of people The restaurant takes effort to be a higher level dinning establishment at the cost of affordable family dinning. For someone who was in the industry you can tell his kitchen crew are chefs and not just cooks. They also have a wide range of dishes for someone new to the Chinese and Hong Kong style foods to the ethnic acurate traditional dishes. I recommend this restaurant to everyone and come here often. I have never been disapointed in the full experience
Great food and great service. The owner himself came over and gave us the best guidance I have ever received in a restaurant. He steered us towards some things that were new and amazing – taking us out of our standard safe/boring comfort zone and introducing us to some things we can’t wait to try again. Fantastic experience and hope to get back soon.
We were a group of 8 and I can tell you now we will never, ever step foot in this restaurant again. The manager is also an owner and he is way too hands on. He sat down at our table with half a glass of scotch while we were waiting for our other guests to arrive. He was too talkative when really, all we wanted to do was read the menu. Anyway, after the rest of our group arrived, we ordered dinner for six and a few other dishes. The dishes are small and spread out on large platters. Every now and then the waitress would take away a plate (mid-meal) to transfer it to a smaller one. This is annoying at best and TOO HANDS ON! I don’t appreciate my dishes being taken away during a meal to be transferred to a smaller plate! I understand why they do it, but like most diners, I do not like my dishes being taken completely away from the table only to reappear on a different plate. It’s very disconcerting. The fish maw soup we ordered was watered down and tasted like green onion and ginger. It had little to no fish maw in it. The Peking duck was tiny and tasteless and the lettuce that accompanied the second Peking duck dish was warm and limp. We also ordered a side of clams in a black bean sauce. The clams were over cooked and they were extremely difficult to eat. The clams were so overdone they had long stringy bits stuck to the shell. They could not easily be removed. We called over the a waitress to inform her of this and we saw she immediately spoke to the manager/owner. The manager, Phillip cam over to our table and you could see straight up from his demeanor that he was not happy. His stance appeared defensive before even speaking to us. He then ARGUED his clams were cooked correctly and we were mistaken. We told him the dish needed to be replaced because it was overdone and inedible. He said he cannot ask his chef to under cook it and we said that was fine. We don’t want that either, we want it cooked correctly. Not over and not under. He looked angry. He looked like a little old boy who was about to have a temper tantrum. The mere fact that he argued with us was appalling. Before we had even finished our dinner, a waitress came over to our table and asked us what we wanted to bring home with us. I looked at her and said we’re not finished eating! Twice she tried to rush us out when we had only been dining for about one hour. The restaurant was not busy and there were several empty tables. All this on a Friday night. Truly, this speaks volumes about this restaurant and perhaps we should have taken it as a warning to dine elsewhere. As we were leaving the restaurant, the now visibly intoxicated manager/owner/Phillip approached me to state AGAIN the clams were cooked right. He could not ask his chef to under cook as it would give us diarrhea (his exact words). Seriously? His breath reeked of alcohol. His eyes were red and runny looking. This man SHOULD NOT be in the hospitality business. He is argumentive and cannot accept any criticism from the food that comes out of his kitchen. The food is mediocre at best. We will never dine here again. With this manager being so hands on and so perfectly right, I give this restaurant another year before it closes its doors permanently. I hope others will read this review and pay heed. The manager/owner is going to be the downfall of this establishment. That and the fact the food is nothing to write home about.
Worst. Service. Ever. W…. Worst. Service. Ever.We had a reservation on Sunday night at 6 pm. We all arrive on time, in fact, early at 5:50, except one person who was parking the car. As we were sitting down, the manager asked us to order immediately, because they wanted to clear our table for another round of business as soon as possible. When we told him we were still waiting for one more person (who arrived at 6:02), he told us to order for her in her absence.Anyway, we ordered a set dinner (for the record, the food was good). There was a steamed fish, which unfortunately, had an overpowering dirt taste and we asked the manager about it (it wasnt the chefs fault, you cant just cook the dirt taste out). Great, the dish was replaced, but we were appalled when the manager proceeded to inform us that he and two of his chefs tasted the fish and found absolutely no dirt taste at all, but because he didnt want to argue with customers he was gracious enough to replace the dish no questions asked. WTF?! If you dont want to argue with customers, then dont tell them theyre wrong, because theyre usually not. The woman who worked the cash register walked over and told us that all fish have that taste. Wow, thats a big generalization, which unfortunately is incorrect. The server also gave us attitude and condescendingly mumbled out loud what do you want us to do if the replacement fish has a bad taste tooNear the end of the meal, the manager gave me the bill and impatiently stood above me while I still had the majority of my dessert to finish. I glanced at the door; no one was waiting for a table. In the end, we spent 60 minutes in the restaurantfor a party of eight. In my 25+ years of dining in the GTA, Ive never encountered service this appallingly poor. I have also never used derivatives of appalling twice in the same review, nor have I ever used expletives. Having to rush your customers even when theyre on time probably means youre in desperate need of revenue, and it signals that maybe your business model needs changing. If you boast that your fish is fresh and its not, then replace it and shut the f__k up. I strongly do not recommend this restaurant, because your hard-earned money is better spent elsewhere (unless youre sadistic and enjoy taking abuse from others), and you shouldnt have to take sh_t from managers and cashiers and servers who think they know better than you.
