Didn’t even notice this place until we got hungry and decided to go in and try it out. The shop is cute and I love the drawings stuck on the wall to honour the restaurant.I tried the matcha beer and it was surprisingly pretty good considering I’m not a beer fanatic. Also has he rekon chips which were also delish.Great place to come and eat for sure.
Very low-key, casual atmosphere. The walls are adorned with hand-drawn anime. The Naruto movie was playing in the background while we were eating, along with Asian pop (couldn’t tell if it was J-Pop or K-Pop). Donburi is excellent and unique in that not many places I know of specialize in this simple Japanese rice dish. The service was friendly. The food was flavourful (sauces they use are amazing in my opinion). And there is a LOT of rice, so be prepared to be stuffed!
The inside was rather well-lit, and though it was evident that the tables had been worn down slightly, the abundance of colour made it less obvious. Donburi also had a variety of J-Pop songs playing throughout the meal, and also happened to be airing Pycho-Pass on two TV screens located above the area where the chefs prepared the food at the far back wall of the restaurant. After going through the vast number of choices, the Chicken Omurice and Umami Don were chosen. We were then instructed – WHY YES, instructed – to mark down our choices on an order sheet by an thoroughly rude waitress before she grudgingly brought the sheet to the kitchen.Shortly following the typical miso soup and garden salad starters, the meals arrived. In conclusion, Donburi is quite a nice little hangout spot for those craving Japanese food, and don’t mind the sodium and MSG attacks later on. (My throat became extremely dry the second I left the restaurant due to the ingestion of high levels of MSG.) The customer service, on the other hand, is something that gets me annoyed every time I weigh out the pros and cons of this place.View the full review (with photos) HERE! http://bit(dot)ly/2dkRTvD quirkyaesthetics.com
There’s no wow factor in the food. It’s alright, but because it’s only alright, what they charge feels a bit pricey. Their service is great, very accommodating. The tofu and the veggies that come in place of rice for their bowls is something people could try as it tastes refreshing– gives a twist to the rice bowls.
Grandma and I were challenged to finish the huge serving of Tendon (tempura rice bowl)–not because it was not good but the serving was huge! As with Bento Boxes, there were more tempura veggies than the shrimp. That was my only issue with that order. While there were 3 pieces of shrimp, they seemed to have been over-pounded to make the piece look bigger with the batter. It was tasty but I would prefer fuller pieces. And despite the girls sharing of the Katsudon (breaded chicken rice bowl), we still had some left over. Their other specialty is Gyudon (beef rice bowl). The sauce is just the right sweetness without making the dish taste like dessert. I love the caramelized onions. They also serve Japas (their version of Japanese tapas) with all sorts of skewers and even my favourite grilled squid! Perfect to complement your Sapporo or Asahi! For about $10, each meal comes with salad and miso soup so it is a good value wanderlustingmama.blogspot.com
I have to say it is very hard to find an Asian restaurant with bar/high tables these days. Due to certain circumstances, I have to look for high tables when I go out and unexpectedly Donburi had them. Awesome! So I have been here in the past and glad to see that it is still around and busy. The staff are quite attentive and we got our food in a timely manner. When you order, you select your items on paper and give it to the staff whenever you’re ready. We all got our own Don and chose a few tapa style items to share- takoyaki, beef tataki, fried lotus root, skewer of Scallop and okra. We also got gyu spicy fries (Japanese style poutine in my opinion with beef) which was a huge portion but flavourful and tasty. For my main meal, I opted for the Japanese grilled chicken with egg don. It was rice with a raw egg and chicken with a lot of green onions- be sure to have gum after your meal lol. I went away from the traditional and popular Japanese beef rice but my friend who got it enjoyed her meal. My other friend had the omurice with which I had a bite and it was yummy but lacked the right amount of chicken. All in all, dinner was good and I would definitely be back for more.
There was a time when Donburi was one of my favourite go-to places. I can confidently say I’ve eaten here well over ten times. Somehow over the years, quality went down while prices went up. I still come here sometimes for a satisfying bowl of gyu don, but has the amount of rice in each bowl been going down? And is it just me, or have their takoyaki been shrinking? They have some interesting appetizers (assorted skewers) and desserts (green tea creme brulee), but they all come in small portions. I have tried the Polar Beer here (Sapporo with frozen foam) and it was quite refreshing.
