In January 2016 I went to the Village Inn in Bowmanville where I live. I’d heard decent things about it from other local residents and decided to give it a try.I ordered a chicken Caesar wrap with fries. When I got it, the fries were cold (not room temp…cold) and the chicken was cold as well (I understand the contents of the wrap are to be cold vegetables, but the chicken itself was not warm or even room temp).By the time my girlfriend had finished her meal, the waitress came over to see if we were finished, asking me about my plate of food that I had not eaten (I had 2 bites of the wrap and since my girlfriend had finished I didn’t feel like waiting another 25 mins to get a fresh plate to replace this one). This is where it got interesting…when I told the waitress not to bother with another plate as we were finished, she argued that I could have had it taken back earlier (even though we hadn’t seen her for the duration of the meal at all) and that they’d be charging me half price for it. Yes, that is right…for having two bites of the meal they still wanted to charge me half price (you can see my photo of it posted in this review). After calmly asking to speak to a manager the waitress stormed off (very rudely, and I would like to clarify I was maintaining a calm attitude throughout this as I personally don’t find the need to be rude in these types of situations as they are what they are. Once she came back she threw the bill onto our table and said that they would cover it.Overall, we paid for our drinks and my girlfriend’s food so it wasn’t as though the Village Inn charged us for what I didn’t eat, we were just more disappointed at the approach i.e. wanting to charge us and getting angry when we wanted to speak to someone about why that was not reasonable. I’m all for giving small restaurants my business, but after this experience I do not think I will be going back to the Village Inn.
The wings were awful, barely any meat, not much flavour and very dry. The pub style food is what it is, nothing special but very affordable. The reason I did not rate lower is because the environment is nice, makes you feel at home, service was very attentive and friendly, and the price is right. Would go back just not for the wings!
