Enjoyable atmosphere with nostalgic Swiss decoration. Although the menu features many popular Swiss dishes the food lacks authenticity and taste has been watered down for a Canadian palate.
Family friendly, with attentive service. An excellent beer selection with generously sized schnitzel and very good roestie for a reasonable price.
Abendessen In Der (Collingwood) Schweiz!. E: This restaurant is a little bit of Switzerland in Canada. There is a Swiss caf in town – in addition to Swiss Chalet of course!! – but Alphorn takes things all the way and seeps into Germany and Austria too.The menu is ridden with sausages, meatloaf, schnitzel, fondue and, of course, beer. So far as I know only fondue is quintessentially Swiss. They serve complimentary bread and margarine to start. The margarine is the typical restaurant packets, but despite being salty the bread is fine. Also complimentary is a bowl of sliced lemon. The $19 (they call it $18.95) Farmers Platter sounds like a good mixed option in order to partake in Weinkraut, Wiener Schnitzel, Fried Bacon, Sausage and Boiled Potato. The waitress offered a seasonal Oktoberfest special for the exact same price containing sausage and schnitzel with a choice of sides. The side choices are rice, Swiss style roseti potato, boiled potatoes or egg fettuccini. It was advertised as including a pork chop, but instead arrived with a thin slice of pork lion. The waitress noted her mistake. The German Style Harvest Sausage is $16 (they call it $15.95). Both these plates were good and together filled all of us given how we were not that hungry to begin with. It was a hearty meal that tasted and felt homemade. The Harvest came with an onion sauce that resembled gravy and a mix of corn and peas. The Oktoberfest meal, obviously, came with sauerkraut, a salty second sausage and a dark meat schnitzel that was a tad chewy and more than a tad thin. The taste here is plain. None of the items tasted overly flavourful. Likely the idea is that the mustard and lemons are all one needs to make it a true Swiss meal. Did I mention that standard here with a meal is the largest jar of meat mustard they could offer? Otherwise, there isnt any garnish, sauce, ketchup, sour cream, dill or whatever on the noodles or potatoes. No one had room for it, but the dessert menu includes crepe (French pancake) or Tartufo (Italian ice cream) or Coupe Danemark (German Sundae). Apparently, the Swiss themselves do not have a sweet tooth (once the chocolate fondue is downed, that is).-A: Alphorn is mostly about the atmosphere. The faade resembles a Swiss chalet eatery. The inside harbours more Switzerland-related knickknacks than oma Heidis living room. The chalk white walls, wooden panels, arcs and ceiling are covered with skis, ski shoes, Swiss maps, German posters, bells, horns (yes alphorns!) and naturally big Swatches. The faded furniture is rustic, but one could easily imagine how he is dining at a Bernese Gasthaus. Directly across from the entrance is a bar area. The large dining area is to the right of the entrance. The washroom is clean, if not dated, but on second look one finds flies and a few hints of rust. Then there is the rumble underneath. German or German Swiss folk music and drinking songs prance out of the speakers.-T: Alphorn is not open for lunch and opens for dinner at 4:00. Not being busy the hostess-cum-waitress was there in a jiffy and eager to take the order sofort. The food also arrived quickly, but again it was still quite early. Water refill was an issue however. The bill arrived immediately once the utensils were taken away.-S: The waitress was fine and candid. Not appreciated was how the restaurant charges $2 per person for anyone not ordering a meal. Walk in, sit down, decide to share and anyone not ordering a meal will be charged two dollars. Never mind if you are not too hungry, you like to share or that you are ordering a mixed platter. Likely in a Freudian slip the waitress offered that they charge two dollars per person. She later would conduct a quality check and become unavailable when we were looking for more water. Overall, her service was fine and she had a cheerful demeanour. The restaurants connection to Switzerland is tenuous. The restaurant was opened years ago by Swiss owners who moved back two decades ago. The current owner has kept it going as a Swiss/German restaurant.Who found this place in a book? No matter, someone, free the goat!
After we were seated, nobody came to our table to even ask to take drink order. A wait staff walked passed our table 3 times without greeting us. It was only 5:30pm and only 2 other tables were occupied, so it’s not that busy. We walked out after about 10 minutes. No service at all, and we will never go there ever again and we will not ever suggest this place to anyone, regardless how good people think the food is.
It’s worth the wait!. The swiss onion soup is the best thing on the menu. This place is always busy but is worth the wait. The schnitzel is amazing! I always ask for a side of mushroom gravy to pour on top! If you’re in the area, you have to go!
We were very please with our meal, and the whole atmosphere at Alphorn. We ate here on a Sunday night on the Family Day weekend and it was really busy. We waited over an hour to be seated, which wasn’t so bad because we enjoyed some drinks with good friends. Another thing to know is that Every table celebrates a Birthday whether it is their birthday or not. The entire restaraunt gets into the spirit and claps and sings along to their catchy birthday tune. Our table shared the cheese fondue which was good, plus we each ate the schnitzel which was excellent. The sides aren’t anything special but the schnitzel makes it worth it. The regular schnitzel order comes with one large piece of meat. The large order is only a few dollars more but comes with two large pieces of meat. Our meal experience was a lot of fun and I would eat here again!
Come early, have a couple drinks, worth the wait. Good fondue, excellent home European fair! 48 European beers! Servers are a bit stretched, schnitzel was good, appetizer not exciting, would cone back.
