No surprise that it’s busy when we got there right before 7pm on a weekday. It had good service and pretty well staffed. We were seated in less than ten minutes. Very courteous and still efficient with our order. We had the classic Max’s chicken, fried pork belly (liempo), garlic fried rice, Bicol express (spicy coconut based stew), miki-bihon(thin and fat chow mein noodles), lumpiang Shanghai (meat spring rolls), sago-gulaman (sweet jelly and tapioca drink) for drinks and halo-halo for dessert. The chicken was surprisingly tender even for the white meat. Portions were big as evidence of the fried rice. The spring rolls could be better. Lacking flavour. The noodles could have been made with more meat and veggies. The Bicol express didn’t have any veggies aside from the hot peppers. It was only made with fried pork belly and combined with coconut sauce. Not the typical or traditional way to cook this dish. The sweet jelly drink I would recommend because it makes all the salty dishes balanced out throughout your meal without filling you just as soda will. The halo-halo was a disappointment having undercooked sweetened fruits. It was tough to chew like the jackfruit that I was so excited to taste. If you are in the neighbourhood and looking for an authentic feel for a Filipino resto, this will fill you up pretty good. For a family of 7, the bill was very affordable with the mandatory 10% tip. We gave another 5% because the servers were very nice and efficient.

We had the seafood pasta, peanut beef pot, the milk fish on a hot plate, the spicy green paste, yam dessert, and the green jelly dessert. Must have dessert! Best part of meal, and the pasts plus dish fish are done nicely as well. RM

It is our third time coming to Max’s. The first two times were alright but this time was very disappointing. All the dishes we ordered were too salty and had nothing special. The dishes are rather expensive while the portions are small for the price. We feel that there may have been a turn-over in the kitchen staff as we remember the dishes had more flavorful taste, delicate preparation, and vibrant presentation.1.) Crabmeat Fried Rice:Soysauced fried rice with peas and diced carrots topped with crabmeat and eggs. (16.99)The rice itself was nothing more special than the regular fried rice you could get from a Chinese restaurant. But the crabmeat topping added a nice twist to the flavor. The portion is good for 3-4 people.Taste rating: 1.5/5Value for price: 1.5/5Overall dish rating: 1.5/52.) Bulalo:Beef shank soup with cabbage, corn, and bokchoi. (16.99)MSG filled = suppper salty! The beef shank, however, was very tender and rich in the natural meat flavor. The corn and cabbage complimented the soup if it were not so salty. The size of the beef shank was decent but there was too little broth. If you like to drink a lot of the liquid soup like I do, this is definetely a dissappointing size. Portion is good for 2-3 people.Taste: 2.5/5Value for price: 0.5/5Overall dish rating: 1/53.) Pinakbet (vegetable stew):Pumpkin, long green bean, eggplant, bittermelon, shredded pork, and shrimp stewed in shrimp paste. (10.99)Interesting mix of vegetables, spiced up by the shrimp paste, and a healthy option. Because of the bitterness, I normally don’t eat much bittermelon despite its good health benefits. The shrimp paste covers the bitterness, making it enjoyable to eat. However, the long beans were a bit undercooked and the dish cannot be considered as a real vegetarian dish.Taste: 3/5Price for value: 3/5Overall dish rating: 3/54.) Daing na bangus:Fried marinated boneless tilapia served with vinegar and marinated radish shreds. (18.99)The most terrible dish of the night. The fish was tasteless and over-fried. The size of the fish was pretty small and 50% of the fish was too dry and hard to eat. The side radish shreds was surprisingly refreshing but it was no more than half a handful. We asked if we could have a little more of the radish but the waiter said they have to charge extra. O_o” Because of the over-fried sections of the fish, it was only enough for 2 people.Taste: -1/5Value for price: -5/5Overall dish rating: Do not order -.-The service and the restuarant atmosphere were pleasant. However, they charged a 10% tips automatically on the bill without informing us. If you go, make sure you pay close attention to avoid double paying tips. Just for the food, I would probably never go again.

Being Filipino born and raised in Toronto, I’ve always held off going here on the basis that my review would be biased. But now that I am both a chef and a food critic, I have decided to come to try out Max’s of Manila. When I first walked in the door, I was strangely surprised at how small the dining room is. Being right on the corner of Dufferin St. and Steeles Ave., the size feels underwhelming compared to other restaurants only 30 seconds away. However, when a restaurant is small, it usually leads to the assumption that service will be quick. I am both saddened and disappointed to say that this is not the case here. Restaurant being only half full, total time it took to receive the food from ordering took about 25 minutes. Completely unacceptable for a restaurant of this size. Normally when the food is late, quality should be top notch to compensate for the lost amount of time. The food flavour-wise, was actually pretty tasty. The whole chicken, priced at 18 dollars is underwhelming for it’s size, but cooked perfectly. The calamari was a little bland and the portion size looked like it was for hamsters and the same could be said about the spaghetti. My party was so eager to leave that we even skipped out on dessert. And for you beer lovers, all they have in-house is domestic beer and the only imported selection is San Miguel. All being said and done, I’m just glad that this is over. If you’re willing to spend a bit more, go to 168 Sushi just a 30 second walk away. I love being Filipino and I definitely have pride in both my heritage and it’s food, but Max’s of Manila doesn’t do either justice.

i was with 3 people in your restaurant last Weds. Oct 7 for lunch and was served with the worst Pansit Bihon Guisado.. it was mix with almost raw pork fat that i even showed to the waiter who was thankful that i brought to his attention, hoping to inform the cook. The laing was even cold with 3 red peppers on top, Kare kare was good as well as your famous fried chicken .. that was disgusting bringing my visiting friends ….

Nothing’s special but friendly staff. Good service. I only like the halo halo. They need to add more meat to their dish and flavouring as it is very bland. What’s the hype about their fried chicken? It’s so dry. I’d like to add, their dishes portions are quite small I find and overpriced!! Not worth the drive and wait time for it.

Nothing Special. The food is not bad in comparison to other filipino restaurants..but be prepared to dig deep into your pockets..I find them quite expensive.
