Loved the restaurant, the food was great, service was a bit slow, but that’s because the restaurant was packed. Looking forward to going back!
Went to Borealis for the first time. Very disappointed in the service and food. Service was extremely slow – was there 3 hours. It took over an hour for our food. My son ordered the 28 day aged steak, medium rare and what he got was medium well. My order was not correct when I got it. My husband, myself and my other son ordered the burgers and they were dry and tasteless. Very disappointing, expected it would be better based on the cost.
Impressive little place, great atmosphere even for a Monday night. Fun and a little flirty staff is exactly what you need in a strange town travelling alone. The food was good quality bar food, I ordered the striploin medium rare and it did not disappoint. Also served a very nice craft pale ale. I will definitely be back.
Service: friendly and mindfulAtmosphere: upscale northern Food: wonderful. Would return? Yes. Went to the one in Guelph a while ago and decided to have a date night here. We were greeted by a kind and very perky hostess. The building was decorated like most upscale restaurants: dim lighting, specials on chalk boards etc., but the decor was accented with birch trunks and evergreen branches. This gave it a distinct Canadian feel, even if it was a bit stereotypical. Found out that their date night deal was unfortunately the previous night, but that’s on us for not doing the right research. Was pleasantly surprised that they had rotating features of local brews on tap and a flight sampling of four beers. This was great because it allowed me to taste all four special features. I ordered the mushroom fusilli and my girlfriend decided on the striploin. They came out promptly and were great with every bite. The fusilli came with a pesto sauce, red onions, marinated tomatoes, and garnished with goat cheese. This was excellent with the sauce being nice and creamy, and all flavours mixing wonderfully. The steak came with a bacon cream sauce, garlic mashed potatoes, and seasonal vegetables. It was hard to get one but I was able to convince my girlfriend to share a piece with me. It was nice and tender with all the flavour you would expect from a good steak and the sauce was a great addition to a good cut of meat. After a quick look at the dessert menu we decided on the sampler platter, choosing raspberry sorbet, apple and blueberry cobbler, and the chocolate mousse. The sorbet was nice and refreshing, a great pallette cleanser; the cobbler was nice and sweet; the mousse was smooth and filled with a rich and deep taste. A great way to end a meal. All in all it was a very pleasant experience with the staff, food and decor. There are plenty of wonderful places to check out repeatedly in the KW, and this should be on the list.
I’ve been to Borealis twice now – once on a Wednesday date night (2 can dine for $49), and once for an early dinner with famy. Both times the staff have been exceptionally welcoming, friendly, and helpful. The food is very good, well presented, and much of it is locally sourced. Both times we sat in the room at the top of the stairs which has great ambience and may be quieter than the room at the front by the bar. Have recommended to friends, and definitely will return!
I went here about a month ago for my friend’s birthday and got a seasonal mushroom pasta dish. all of the food I had (I sampled from others’ plates) was delicious and fresh. despite people complaining to me about the price, I think the price was definitely reasonable for their business model. my only complaint is the atmosphere. the staff don’t seem very warm and welcoming, and the music was so loud I could hardly hear the people at my table. all in all, I would come back, but only at someone else’s bequest.
My partner has been to Borealis a couple of times before and said the food was good, and after two failed attempts (with no reservations), we got in on a Wednesday night. I ordered the fish tacos, and he ordered the elk tacos. Although the presentation is visually appealing, as much as open-faced tacos and all their fun toppings thrown on top of a wooden board can be, it just wasn’t really practical when eating something as messy as tacos can be. They do give you a good amount of fish, which is nice. But the flavour of my tacos felt… off. I eat a lot of seafood, but this fish didn’t taste the freshest. I didn’t finish my tacos, and my partner felt his elk tacos were dry and a bit bland, though he said the food he’s gotten from there in the past had been better. The service was great, and very quick. Unfortunately, the food just fell flat for what my expectations were, and I ended up with an upset stomach all night after being there.
