We had a really bazaar experience at this place. The food was amazing the venue good, but we were made to feel unwelcome upon arrival. I went as part of a group of friends, many of us hadn’t seen each other in years. We had a reservation for 6pm that we had made two weeks in advance. Upon arriving we were told in a very condescending manner that they didn’t do reservations for the patio but they could possibly find a way to accommodate us (they had not mentioned this when we made the booking). As is the case with any group event, people were still trickling in until about 7pm. We were all ordering drinks, but they informed us at 6:45 that we better hurry with food because they had another booking at 8pm (said to us by the same matre d/host that had told us they didn’t reserve the patio). Throughout the whole meal the matre d kept returning to our table to ask us about others coming to the table and pressuring us to hurry. I do not understand the behaviour, we had a booking, we were all decently dressed polite professionals who were ordering food and drinks. We had planned on ordering desserts and staying much longer. We left before 8. We did not complain and we still tipped as it was not the servers fault. This was one of the few times we may all see each other in a very long time so we moved and had a great time at other places and spent a lot of money at friendlier establishments. But a lot of us were pretty upset with how we were treated.
Evening had so much promise. Great atmosphere food smelled good that’s if you can actually get it.Sat at the bar, got a flat beer, ordered a burger and waited 40min. No sign of the food.Told them forget it. Bartender was nice enough to give me the beer on the house.I will not go back here.
2016/12/31Allen’s was a very pleasant surprise. We stopped in for lunch on New Year’s Eve. Actually we were aiming for the pub next door, but they were not open for lunch, so we thought we would give Allen’s a try. We had never heard of it before and did not know what to expect. What we got was good food and good service in a slightly upscale restaurant bar that looks like it has been around for a while and has been very well maintained. Lots of photos adorn the walls, likely from musicians who had played next door at the concert hall. There was a private party at the bar at the front of the restaurant, so we had to wiggle our way to the dining room in the back half. There we were promptly seated at one of the blue and white checkered tablecloth tables. The full menu was presented, but we stuck to the Brunch page. SWMBO ordered the Buttermilk Pumpkin Waffles with Pure Maple Syrup, with a side of Smoked Ontario Bacon. Good waffles, where the pumpkin flavour was pleasant and not overwhelming. Very good syrup too. I had the 3 Egg Frittata with Sweet Potato Hash Browns, with brown toast. On this day the frittata came with tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, and Swiss cheese. Fluffy eggs and fresh ingredients. The hash browns were lightly cooked, with sauted onions, leaving the cubed sweet potatoes soft and only slightly caramelized. I would have preferred them to be a bit crispy, but they were tasty nonetheless. Our server was pleasant, polite and attentive.
