Exquisite French food at its best. I have never known such passion placed into a menu. Tactile flavours hit you with every mouthful. We had to order two rounds of the appetisers. An experience that will be revisited.
Fantastic. Everything was absolutely wonderful. And I can’t believe the location. Had the escargot and the lamb confit special. Tarte tartin for dessert.
Batifole is a pretty nice French restaurant located in the heart of Old Chinatown on the East End of the Downtown core. The place itself looks more like a residential home on the outside, but definitely a nice intimate atmosphere inside. The place is rather quiet and the decor made it feel as though we were in a small cafe or bistro as opposed to a fancy pants restaurant.I came for Duck Two Ways, and damnit, I’m getting the duck two ways. First things first, we started off with the Crab and Rock Fish Soup. The broth is so aromatic and the flavor was present throughout. The bread they gave us was pretty badly burnt though so we discarded it. Crab wasn’t very present, but the soup itself was just so good. As for the duck two ways, it is duck confit with some duck breast slices served atop a bed of muscat grapes. The meat was tender and though the portion was a bit petite, the taste was all there. Girlfriend ordered the Cassoulet with white beans. The platter itself was overall pretty salty and she had picked more at my plate than hers.Forgive the photos. The place itself was rather dark, combined with my crappy camera lent itself to rather crappy photos. Nonetheless, it also shows just how dimly lit and romantic the place can be. Definitely worth going for a quiet date. cheatdayeveryday.com
Meh.. Service was decent, cake for desert was amazing! Terrine appetizer was pretty good. The mains, especially the John Dory special special were super salty. The duck duo was average. The duck breast was good, the confit leg was mediocre. Decent enough that I’ll probably give it one more chance, but kind of expected better.
Nice surprise. We had a lovely dinner for four people. Service was friendly and efficient. Food excellent and authentic. We’ll definitely be back.
A let down…. When I first relocated to Toronto, I had a friend highly recommend Batifole. We are lovers of fine dining, and particularly enjoy well prepared French cuisine. As we live in the east end, I thought that Valentines Day would be a great opportunity to check out Batifole, and given the weather of late, it was nice to stay close to home. They had a Valentines special which included a cocktail to start, and several options – good value for $46/each. The food was inconsistent. The potager was disappointing – I had to resist asking for hot sauce. Under-seasoned, bland soup is not something the French are known for. Our tenderloins were delicious, and the accompanying sauce and greens were really nice. Dessert was also delicious. Soup aside – Our meal was good.My only hesitation in recommending Batifole would be the service. I understand that it was busier than a typical Thursday – but the lead server was gruff, and I would go as far as to call him unfriendly. He shouldn’t be in the service industry at all. An example would be how irritated he was when we asked for the wine list – seriously?? The host seemed pleasant, as did the bus girl. This place is clearly past it’s prime.
Batifiole Not worth It. We ate there tonight after hearing about it from Bay St friends who spent $500 there between 4 people. The decor is really cheap ad sub par. Rather bad paintings on the wall, cheap lighting. and the bathroom was awful. I wondered if there were freeze dried tampons on top of the toilet, but it was some attempt at pot pourri. The French cafe music was nice. The bar was ill conceived, with a cheap wooden sideboard, and I recognized that all the china and glassware was from Ikea. Somehow 1960’s Swedish style doesn’t meld with French Empire cheap sideboard.I ordered the liver appetizer as my main, but got charged a main price. The execution was decent. The Langduoc wine was good. My partner ordered the $27 duck, and then had to order the sides at $10 each separately. That made for $47 entree, and I’d rather spend that money at ByMark, and get a great bathroom, and superb tableware and decor. The dessert of Iles Flottant was terrific, and enough for two. There was a horrible hint on the bill (along with cheap candies), suggesting that we pay with debit or cash, because visa was charging a lot. Really tacky.Really uneven. Pay for 2 hours of an interior decorator, and get a great wall colour and some moody black and white photography on the walls. Serve some sides with your mains. After all, the rent is cheap.
