The pizza here is one of the worst deep dish pizzas I’ve ever had in my whole entire life. The meat is blant, the sauce is horrible and lacking any sort of seasoning. Please don’t insult good pizzas by serving this crap.

I called to make sure that they closed when their website said they were going to close and then arrived an hour after calling only to find out that they decided to close early– an hour and a half earlier than both what their website says AND what the person confirmed when I called! We went an hour out of our way to come there, and made sure to call to confirm they would be open and still they closed. Will never be going to this place again.

This new pizza joint in Toronto’s east end specializes in deep-dish, a style originating and popularized in Chicago. Double D’s has three flavour combinations to choose from: Chicago Classic (pepperoni and Italian sausage); Jalapeo Blue (Blue Cheese, Italian Sausage, Bacon, Jalapeos); and Farmers Market (Roasted Red Peppers, Mushrooms, Red Onion, Spinach). You can also build your own small, medium or large pizza pie, or opt for a personal size (dine-in only). But patience is needed, as Chicago-style pizza cannot be rushed. It takes approx. 40 minutes to make. This was actually my second attempt at trying Double D’s. I visited the first week it opened but they ran out of dough and it would have been at least 1hr and 45min before they would have more and we would have been served. So, we tried again and the second visit was a success. The venue is small, so takeout seems to be the recommended approach. In fact, the restaurant suggests calling ahead to order so you won’t have to wait around. I was lucky enough to snag a couple of spots and dine-in. My dining partner and I got two personal sizes to share: the Classic (meat!) and Farmers Market (veggie!). They both tasted similar, as the sauce and cheese are the dominant flavours. That being said, the marinara sauce was in desperate need of some herbs and spices. The sauce was almost sweet tasting. I love cheese, but the amount used was too much for me as it overpowered the meat/veg and was a glob-y, rubbery mess once the pizza pie cooled in the slightest. In summary, my experience at Double D’s satisfied my curiosity, but it didn’t satisfy my pizza craving. Neapolitan style pizza still reigns in my books.
