Depending on where else you have had dumplings you may or may not like this. Personally I wasn’t blown away. The filling was packed loosely so that when you bit into it, it fell apart easily, not something I care for. The dumplings including the wraps are made in house so that was good & I think I noticed somewhere that they don’t cook with preservatives (MSG). There was someone actually standing behind the counter rolling out the wraps and assembling dumplings. It’s actually pretty impressive to watch them turn a little round ball of dough into a thin round disk. The chef seems a little heavy handed with the salt as a few of our dished were extra salty. Also, in my opinion they use too much oil. I had my dumplings with lots of ginger & red vinegar to help cut down the grease. Things I liked: the soup filled dumplings (not the best I’ve ever had but still pretty good), the beef wrapped onion pancakes, and the flavour of the pork & dill dumplings were good.Things that could have been better: dumpling fillings should be a denser texture (should not be loose), older thicker stocks of the snow pea shoots should be picked out & not served, and use less salt & oil. I prefer the Dumpling House on Spadina or better yet some of the dumping places in Scarborough, Markham or Richmond Hill.
Don’t buy their frozen dumplings. I live in the chinatown there and I like to buy a bag of dumplings after work but every bag they sell me has 3 to 4 stinky dumplings. Keep eating their dumplings = keep eating stinky meat. You will die early.
I’ve been to the dumpling house on Spadina and I’ve had good experiences there with dumplings that I always crave and wanting to go for more. I tried out this new location on the east end and I was rather quite disappointed. Once stepping into the restaurant I noticed it was really cramped they could probably take out one or two tables rather than trying to squeeze as many as they can. I ordered a pancake with chive and eggs and dumplings and a bowl of noodles. The beef noodles was decent but the dumplings looked and tasted funny and the pancake which was fried on the outside was still cold on the inside. I’m not sure about coming back to this location anymore and rather just go to the Spadina one.
Dumpling House is the best addition to East Chinatown in a long time. Food is amazing – reminds me of my travels with every bite. Haven’t found an item I didn’t like. I don’t agree with any online reviews re: bad service – my experience has been the exact opposite. The servers are extremely polite, friendly, and welcoming. The Chinese TV is great too. I just wish they had a wider beer selection!
Not as good as Spadina. The dumplings here are only adequate, unlike the superb dumplings available at The Dumpling House on Spadina. Food and service were both OK, but not exceptional and I was surprised the restaurant was busy.
Yummy dumplings. I went to this place after reading the reviews and was not disappointed. I originally went here because I didn’t feel like driving to Spadina, but now I have a closer awesome dumpling place! had the chicken, and the veggie dumplings. Both had amazing flavors, the veggie probably had fennel (the vegetable not the seed). The chicken was so good you could eat it without sauce. The hot and sour soup large is big enough for two hungry people, and is quite spicy, tons of tofu, bamboo shoots and mushroom pieces. Also tried the deep fried tofu, which was a large portion, and was in a brown sauce. Restaurant is long and narrow, very tidy, and a woman was making the dumplings behind a counter. Great find!
Best dumpling ever. We found the large portions to be quite good and inexpensive. Everything was clean and the staff was pleasant , Definitely a good choice if you want good Chinese .
