Nice little dim sum restaurant on the Danforth. The restaurant itself is nothing fancy for sure but the food we had was excellent. We had a selection of dim sum items and every one was great, hard to pick out a favourite among them. We also had soups to begin with, my companion had a wonton soup and I had a hot and sour soup and it was one of the best I’ve ever had, almost a meal in itself. To top it all off the prices were very reasonable. I will definitely return if I am in the area again.
I really wanted to like this place but their food was so-so. Only thing that really stood out for me was the steamed spinach, shrimp and garlic dumplings. They were so good and I kind of wished that was the only thing I ordered and more of it for sure. I ordered steamed beef shiu my but it seemed like the meat was pork. The steamed eggplant and garlic was ok. Deep fried squid was super salty and deep fried shrimp balls..well they’re deep fried and plus they weren’t really balls. Our shrimp fried rice never came but by then, we just cancelled it since I had no feel for it anymore. I would give it another chance but maybe next time, I’ll stick to their steamed items. Friendly staff though! And the lady staff apologized for not having the shrimp fried rice brough out.
Strong Tastes for a Small Selection. Some of the best finds at Ha Gow were the Steamed Eggplant with Garlic and Deep Fried Tofu with Special Spicy Salt. Both had some extremely strong flavours on them. The eggplant was loaded with garlic, so if that’s not your flavour, avoid it, but if it is, it’s a really tasty dish that strikes you with each bite of the soft eggplant. The tofu was a crisp deep fried exterior with a hot soft interior. Just make sure you have water because while the spicy salt is mild and flavourful, it is after all, salt.Other than that the dishes at Ha Gow are basic dim sum, with some interesting takes on them. It’s a small menu, but the prices are reasonable (under $4 each) and priced according to size. There’s also a section dedicated to some great vegetarian options as well.If you go on a weekday, arrive just before the school across the street lets out for lunch. You wont find a seat as it is a pretty small restaurant and there’ll be a line-up of students looking to buy some of the other affordable takeout lunches.
