Yummy food, friendly service! Great for vegetarians!! (:. Ive been eating regularly at Mong-Kut Thai for years, especially since I moved to the Greektown / Danforth neighbourhood seven and a half years ago. Out of all the restaurants on the Danforth (including those that have come and gone) Ive found this to be one of the most consistent in terms of quality of food, friendly service and relaxed atmosphere; including when they had their first location a bit down the street, closer to Pape. I lived in northern Thailand for a year (almost two decades ago now, wow!) and Ive never found a place in Toronto that really served anything quite like I ate in Thailand, but Mong-Kut Thai is one of the places Ive tried in Toronto with more genuinely Thai style food (with some adaptations for Canadian expectations and tastes)…and, more to the point, their food is super tasty and yummy! I almost always order cold veggie rolls and they are a great appetizer…tofu, shredded cabbage and carrots that have been soaked in a tasty sweet vinaigrette, with sprigs of refreshing mint fully wrapped up in soft rice paper, paired with a totally addictive sweet peanut sauce. The veggie spring rolls are tasty too and come with yummy sweet and sour sauce. Some of my favourite dishes are the veggie phad thai, stir fried eggplant (theyll add tofu for a dollar or two extra), lemongrass tofu, pineapple fried rice, red veggie curry, som tam (papaya salad but I ask for it without the dried shrimp sadly they dont have sticky rice) and the glass noodle salad. Another great dish is called tofu song kleung its a mild soup full of large chunks of soft tofu, bok choi, mushrooms and other veggies. They have lovely jasmine tea, guava, mango and other juices and good thai iced tea (as well as other beverages). While I can only personally vouch for the vegetarian dishes, my dad usually orders the Basil beef and that keeps him happy. Ive brought many friends to Mong-Kut Thai over the years and just about every one of them has been very happy with their food and the whole experience, including a friend of mine who is gluten free. Its one of another friends favourite Thai places in Toronto. I started bringing my parents a few years ago. In no time they went from never having tried Thai food to suggesting we go there every time they came for a visit. (: The one dish Ive tried that was not my favourite was the Jungle curry, which is on the back page of the menu. It was a clear broth veggie curry and was very bland. Ive seen lots of serving staff come and go over the years but Ive always found them to be friendly. Sometimes previous staff come back for Taste of the Danforth or for another serving stint so I figure it must be a decent place to work. One last thing about the service…I live alone and work long hours so I tend to eat out a lot, especially when Im doing a lot of overtime at work. So, needless to say, Im a regular at a few places on the Danforth. One time a few years ago I was coming home from work and it was getting a bit on the late side. I was hoping to make it to some place along the Danforth to get some dinner before everything closed. I was on my way to Mong-Kut Thai but just when I got there they were shutting off their open sign. I slowed and stopped and was about to figure out where else I could go when the owner (Sam) saw me an insisted I come in, even though they were essentially closed. It was so nice of him because Id had a long day, had probably missed lunch, and was really hungry…point being, Sam and Wan (the owners) rock!
Great Food, fast, friendly – great service, we keep coming back. We have been regularly (weekly) ordering take-out for years. Great service and delicious food. Cashew-nut chicken is sublime.
Not what it used to be. I drop by regularly for lunch; sadly I can’t help but notice a slow decline over the past year. Finally, at my last visit (on a Sunday), I was fed up with the unacceptably long wait time (there were only 5 tables and yet a 30 minute wait for the food) and mediocre food that I decided not to go back in the future.
Good food and fair. I have been to this restaurant so many times their food is so great and generous portion, I also tried their grill (not the same location)it was good I like their marinated chicken it likes chicken satay and it is very good prices $ 12.95 silver set I paid only one times but I could ask for more, I also like their dipping sauce for grill stuffs the one that I liked was ginger sauce. Their a la carte is very good and very tastety. The original one they only serve menus but the new one they serve both a la carte and grill.
The food can be summed up in one word, or perhaps three is more appropriate: bland, bland, boring. I’ve never had to pay for food that was so dull and unseasoned in my life – especially Thai food. We had their grill special which consisted of various, unseasoned, meat and even worse – dull sauces. I eventually had to ask for salt and pepper to season the food myself. The only decent thing on the menu was the Thai iced tea.
