This is our neighbourhood bar. It’s deliciously dimly lit with soft flickering flame-light at every table. The decor lends itself to an old world feel with a melange of collectibles from another era. The bar serves the best cocktails in the hood, and the best Tom Collins in the city. It’s also the only bar that I know of who’s food is at par with their drinks. We have come here for drinks and dinner for years, and have brought friends for dinner, and they have all loved the food, drinks and ambience. My only complaint is at times the music is a tad too loud, so it’s hard to have a conversation: owners please take note. The staff are friendly, inviting and knowledgeable; there’s no arrogance or attitude here, this place is all grown up.
Before a show at The Opera House, my friends and I had dinner at The Comrade. We ended up here by chance. Our original restaurant pick was too full but this one had a nice casual atmosphere about it. I ordered the Hanger Steak ($19). It was a PEI grass-fed beef with roasted vegetables. The steak had a lovely butteriness to it.To drink, I had one of their lovely cocktails, Gilded Radner, which was Tanqueray gin, Fernet Branca, Peychaud bitters, lemon juice, ginger syrup, cucumber and egg whites. If youre expecting a meal, this is not really the place to be. The Comrade is more about having drinks and sharing food with friends. tianafeng.com
Good beer selection, martinis are not good. Back room smells overpoweringly of mould, some confusion in the decor (pop art/Asian/industrial ) and music styles. service was friendly but slow on sat night 10ish. Seating limited, couches comfy but bring a cushion.
