This place has been a staple in east York forever. Had a really nice Reno not to long ago. Good breakfast joint and greasy spoon diner. Bacon is always crispy
Hometown friendly, even if you’re from out of town 🙂 great crew and they took wonderful care of our children!
The Real Deal. I’ve been going to this place for roughly 44 years now. It’s been an East York mainstay for longer than that. This is an old school comfort food greasy spoon…and I mean that in a good way. The food is homemade and downhome, portions are huge. The soups are fantastic and the breakfast is dynamite. Even the homefries are real skillet fried potatoes. The Donlands burger is legendary….big and damn good. I grab a burg and fries and gravy for lunch to go fairly often…a huge delicious lunch for under ten bucks. I’ve seen a bad review and the main complaint was the service. Keep in mind this is an old school diner….high maintenance types should go somewhere else. Their job is to fill you up with great food….not wait on you hand and foot…..and that’s what this place does. My uncle comes to visit from out west occasionally and the first thing he wants when he gets here is breakfast at Donlands. If you’ve never been do yourself a favour and go….if you’ve been then you know what I’m talking about. The decor and the food have remained pretty much the same for years and I truly hope it stays that way. It’s one of the last great old school diners left in this city….
My boyfriend and I went here for a quick bite before running errands. Nothing was quick about our visit and we didn’t end up eating. We walked in and seated ourselves and about ten mins without a waitress in sight, we grabbed menus. A woman who I guess works there was busy talking to customers about where she had traveled in Greece so I guess our business could wait. Eventually a server came and I ordered a career, him diet coke. My caeser came in a tiny glass filled with ice and no rim or lemon/lime garnish. It was terrible. We ordered a tuna melt and a peameal and egg sandwich. I’m a server in a restaurant and on a busy day that would take 15 mins to come out of the kitchen. We waited for 50 mins. I had to order another drink and coffee as the wait was so long (which I ordered at the bar as table service was just not happening.) I also had to get change to put more money on our parking ticket. We hadn’t intended on being their more than an hour, so after one hour had passed we were wondering what the hold up was. The straw that broke our Donlands experience back was when a couple who had arrived 20 mins after we did were served their order. Leaving us still hungry but now somewhat angry. We paid for the drinks and left. What a waste of time and money! We went to another establishment and were done our drinks and meal in the time we were still waiting at Donlands. As a server I think this is absolutely unacceptable and the wait time inexplicable. Won’t be back. Luckily there’s lots of other well run restaurants in the area
User reviews. Been going there for 42 years breakfast is best deal around . an east york institution dinners wat h for cook overcooking orders.
I ordered the spaghetti and garlic cheese bread. The spaghetti was over cooked, the meat sauce had BBQ sauce in it. Garlic cheese bread was actually a hotdog bun sprinkled with burnt galic powder with cheese. My friend ordered the cheese burger( it was okay) and got it with pickles, tomatoes, relish she did not ask for any of these items and it wasn’t mentioned on the menu. I think this is probably a breakfast only kind of place. It does have a cool diner vibe.
Dreaming of the perfect greasy spoon breakfast? The test: Eggs, over easy, done flawlessly every time. All the rest of their menu prepared with the same loving care.
