Im not sure what happened last night but this was our second visit and one of the mos disappointing dining experiences Ive ever had. The restaurant was almost empty with only one other table. We were greeted by a young man in his winter coat and earbuds asking us if there was something he could help us with? Then another very young man seated us. He was obviously one of the sons. Too young to serve alcohol and knew nothing about the menu. He had no idea if they sold beer and had to check. It was bizarre. The owners wife brought the wine after quite some time. We ordered Caesar salad and calamari. The salad was just terrible. Soggy and tasteless. I swear it was made the day before. We couldnt eat it. The calamari was served with shrimp cocktail sauce and average at best. No one came for the longest time. I finally got up and interrupted the wifes candy crush game at the bar to tell her the salad was terrible. She quickly went to the kitchen. Then the son comes running out and removes the plate. Not a word spoken. She never returned to talk to us. Unbelievable really. For the main course I ordered lasagne but she didnt think she had any. She wasnt sure – really? What would be my second choice? She never came back to let me know what I was getting, so I asked the son and he bluntly said Im sure its not lasagne cause we dont have any. Our mains came out separately which was also strange. We ate, asked for the bill (cost of salad removed but no explanation) and left. On a side note the younger son was shaking tablecloths outside the front door, the older son was smoking outside continually as the mother gave him hell and told him to go somewhere else. We had no offer of bread, no one serving our wine or refilling water. Im not sure the actual owner was even there. We wont be back. They really are not running this place properly. Which is to bad because there was potential.
This is a fine Italian restaurant, with very good food, a pleasant wine selection, good decor and excellent, personable service.Upon arriving, we were both greeted by the owner, and immediately served a deliciously warm serving of home-made bread. We both ordered the chicken parmigiana and one of us ordered the Casari mara valpolicello ripasso wine — there was a tiny bit of a mixup because we were brought a white wine but this was replaced immediately with the correct one, along with apologies for the mixup. The meal was very good, the freshly made pasta and sauce (tomato with pesto) was perfect, as was the breaded chicken with melted mozzarella and basil sauce. The veggies were served with a balsamic glaze which made my partner wanted to lick his plate clean. :-)Dessert was FANTASTIC, a chocolate cake which had been heated in the oven such that bits of the sugars were caramelised which resulted in crunchy morsels of chocolatey goodness mixed in with the rest of the cake.Portion size was appropriate, we ended up feeling satisfied and happy. It cost about $70 for a full meal with wine.Just as we were leaving, I chatted with the proprietor about bread-baking techniques (he makes the desserts, pasta and bread, and since I’m an amateur baker I thought I’d pick up some pointers), he gave me advice, an extra loaf of bread, and an offer to drop in any time for some dough to make my own pizza :-)We had an enjoyable evening and great place to visit and eat excellent food at a reasonable price. We’ll go again and recommend you give the place a try too.
