Friendly service but the main reason I go to a restaurant is the food. It was below standard at best. The veggie burger was bad… i was more of a sour and tangy quinoa sloppy joe with an awkward bun. The vegan cheesecake had gone bad so it tasted sour (that was sent back). The curry fries were a touch greasy due to the curry and not the fries. The only compliment I can give is for the Vegan mac and cheese… that was delicious!! Prices are high which means I would much prefer to spend my hard earners money elsewhere.

My husband and I had wonderful meals at The Butcher and The Vegan this week. We both opted for the vegan options for the mains (Tagine for him, Roast Harvest Pizza for me) although he’s a meat-eater. We had the beet ravioli (with goat cheese) to start. A great local wine selection and very yummy vegan cheesecake topped it off. As a vegetarian, I’m so tired of gnocchi or risotto with the same flavours. B&V offered something new and fresh. The service was friendly and attentive, the decor comfortable and the music wasn’t so loud that we could have a good conversation. We’ll go back for the spicy green bean fries!
Butcher and the Vegan is a relaxed and friendly place with a good variety of menu options to appeal to most diners. Recent touchups to the dcor since our last visit have enhanced the ambiance. On this visit we started with an apple-parsnip soup, tasty and well seasoned and a great start on a cold night. My companion really enjoyed the scallops that were large and melt-in-your-mouth. I had the tajine with the meat option. It was good but perhaps a little too generous with the goat. Our dessert of “potato“ sundae (vanilla ice cream made to look like a baked potato) was fun and delicious. All in all, this is the type of go-to restaurant we would be pleased to visit regularly.
It seems that the Butcher and the Vegan got off to a rocky start when it first opened. However, you should definitely check this place out. It seems like it is ever evolving!B+V offers up a seasonally inspired menu featuring producers and suppliers within a 100 km radius of Hamilton. B+V offers a menu that is friendly for vegans and meat lovers alike (a number of the dishes are also gluten free). I can’t rate this a zero too bad. We enjoyed such a nice meal last night at Democracy! Good food and a great server!What does this have to do with the Butcher and The Vegan, you ask? We had intended to try out the Vegan and Butcher – on Barton I explained to the server there that I am both vegan and gluten free – he pointed out three options – one which they were out of the next one (which I could have ordered) and the next one with scallopsI said um I am vegan. He said – oh I forgot and I have to make a call – and walked away.So did weGood choice too, as far as I am concerned because, like I said the meal we had on Locke was just perfect! We shared some cauliflower wings. I had the beet and arugula salad with almond cheese. H had the pesto pizza YUMMY!
First time here I had the lamb curry and cantaloupe ice cream. I enjoyed both so I took my dining group there. Totally mixed reviews. The pickerel with asparagus and spetzel was very good, The only other dish that was enjoyed was the gnocchi. It was unanimous that the pizza although the toppings were lovely, that the sauce was tasteless. The steak was served cold and also didn.t have a lot of flavour. It was also stated in the menu as steak frites on a bed of fries. There was 1 piece of steak and not sliced pieces as people expected.The waitress was very friendly and our group was offered a taste of some craft beer to try. Although there wasn’t one person who liked it, it was a nice gesture that was welcoming.On the flip side, one of our diners did not receive her meal with the rest of the group because the order was lost. They did, however, bring a double portion of the delicious fish which was a nice compensation. Another diner asked about her order it was supposed to have a red sauce. They forgot the sauce and brought her a larger portion with the sauce. Her review was also that this sauce ( must be same as pizza sauce- tasteless.The ambiance of this place is extremely casual. There is an eclectic group of tables and chairs, toys on the tables and it is complete with a hole in the front window resembling a bullet hole. This is very off putting especially when the bill comes. The prices reflect a high end dining room. Sadly, my group did not want to even try a dessert but I know I will be back for the ice cream again. It was scrumptious on my first visit.I sure hope that these are just bumps that this place is going through.
