This place is amazing! We shared a large fry box for two. It was much more than enough!! Everything was so good – the fish, the batters, the fries, the dips. I’m not a fan of hush puppies but I’m not used to them. I can’t wait to go back!
I was so excited after eating here for the first time around a month and a half ago. I had the beer battered cod and chips. It was excellent, lightly battered, well cooked, nicely presented. Very good service! The sparkle was still on the new toy! I want to try a new restaurant at least three times to give it a fair shake. My second visit was a little less of a great experience. I ordered the hush puppies, they sounded great but as they arrived they were burnt. Either the oil was old, or too hot or left in the oven too long. I’m not sure but definitely burnt. My pop was flat, I get it if no one says anything it doesn’t get fixed. But Pop syrup should be checked daily! Especially when you charge how much you do. I also ordered beer battered haddock, single piece with a side of macaroni and cheese. The batter was different from the first visit, ok I understand evolution of a product, usually for the better, not this time. Also I get that cooks are afraid of salt. Yes, too much salt, is bad but none is worse! So tonight was my third visit, I was having high hopes. I ordered the drunken shrimp & cod and chips. The shrimp was excellent, but the four pieces of Melba toast was impracticable. The sauce was so nice soft bread to sop it up would work much better. My fish though, this is a fish and chip shop primarily, had mushy undercooked beer batter! Again totally different consistency from my second visit. Service wise, very little concern or quality checks, tonight pretty much the same. Plunk down the food , clear the plates! Deliver the bill collect your 15%. I told the waitress about the undercooked batter not sure if she passed it on to the kitchen. 30 more seconds would have made the fish great. I really want to support the new restaurants in downtown Hamilton. At the same time I expect the ownership to deliver for my cash! I work hard for it I expect my restaurant to put in the same effort. Well I’m on the fence about going back. We’ll see!
BEST CRAB DIP EVER! I was there just over a week ago and I can’t get this dip out of my mind… I have to go back before the patio closes!! I stumbled on this little whole in the wall while looking for parking on King William and couldn’t be happier! Servers are very friendly and the food is 10/10 honestly!
I went here tonight with a few friends. I couldn’t wait for it to open because I knew it was the Hambrgr restaurant people who opened it. I like that place so I couldn’t wait to try it. I do not tend to do fish and chips because I do not like so much grease.Atmosphere- Cute as a button. The wall planks and mirrors make it look like you are eating inside a boat. Very clever. Very cozy too. Tables I think are just a little too close to be in a comfort zone. I understand it because so many wanted in and were turned away by the wait.Food- 1) Lobster brie fondue- Lots of excellent tasting brie mixture. Perfect amount of bread for dipping. My only complaint is the tiny smiggin of lobster was an insult to my taste buds. There should have been a little more for the price of the dish. 2) We tried the panko and beer batter coating on haddock. ( it is also offered in a gluten free coating.)I preferred the panko but I would go on to say the beer batter was not greasy and both pieces of fish tasted fresh and done perfectly. 3) Battered and fried haloumi cheese was my star of the meal. I did not think I would have preferred it over the great fish but I did. If you like the salty tasting cheese I would recommend it. 4) Fries were ok but not as crispy as I would have liked. 5) coleslaw- meh. Lots of colour but not enough flavour. One last thing to note- Beer selections are good according to my friends. I dont drink beer so that is something I would not usually notice.Service- Orders are taken and filled quickly. Waitresses come around asking if we need anything or remove old plates.Impression- I cant wait to take my family. I will get the haloumi chees only next time I think. ( or try the mussels- They looked good)
A cozy spot on King William. Good menu that goes beyond just fish and chips. The option to choose your fish and type of batter is a good concept, and the fish itself was cooked perfectly and not greasy. The chips were solid as well.The drinks were great, as were the mussels, although I only wish the pot of mussels came with a spoon so you can drink the tasty nectar leftover. At least this place does it right and gives you bread to soak up the broth.Will definitely be back to try some more dishes.
