This is NOT Canadian Chinese food. Coming from someone who’s been born and raised in China this place serves legit Chinese…that is when you get the right chef and when you order the right dishes. My friends and I have this theory that there’s two chefs. One is authentic and one doesn’t know what he’s doing.
Very good food. Relaxed atmosphere, friendly service, and really tasty food. Two complaints, first the beer was not cold enough. Second, one of the employees near the kitchen loudly and disgustingly cleared his throat and then spit in a garbage can near the cash register. It was unpleasant and something he should have done outside instead of in front of the entire restaurant. Other than that I enjoyed my meal there.
Thats called Chinese Food! Authentic Chinese Food, not Canadian Chinese Food! My mother is chinese and I lived in China when I was young, I do recall those dishes I used to had and finally found them here! But be ware what you order if you do NOT familar with the food, go to Mandarin instead. Dumplings are the best and try the pancake roll with beef or house made smoked pork.
Delicious, authentic Chinese food. My family has gone to Sparkle maybe 20 times since they’ve opened. We’re big-time food snobs who’ve grown up eating in Chinatown & Markham and have lived in China for a few years, so the fact Sparkle is our go-to Chinese restaurant in Hamilton says a lot.So does the fact that the restaurant is usually full of young Mainlanders chowing down en mass. Go expecting authentic mainland Chinese food (it will be salty, greasy, and often spicy), not Canadian Chinese (chicken balls & egg rolls) or Cantonese (congee & dim sum). The cons: there is usually only one waitress, so the service can be iffy if they’re busy. There seem to be two chefs on staff, and the quality and taste of food varies from OMGAMAZING to pretty good, but never bad or poorly-made. Take cash and lots of friends so you can sample. http://www.just-eat.ca/restaurants-sparkle-northern-chinese
Terrible. I went to this place late in the evening with my parents. There weren’t many restaurants open that late in the area on a Monday, so we gave this place a try. I wish we had opted to starve for the night instead. The service was terrible. The food ranged from mediocre to bad. We got a lamb dish and a third of it was just cuts of fat. It was spiced right, but it was way too salty and too greasy. The chicken fried rice was poor. The cuts of chicken were the size of corn kernels and not very much in there either. We ordered dumplings and they took forever to come out. We finished the rest of what we had ordered and waited for 10 minutes until the dumplings were served. They didn’t taste like freshly made dumplings either. Tasted like they boiled some flash-frozen dumplings. Also, i could pretty much taste the powdery and pasty MSG and cornstarch on my teeth and tongue after leaving the place. What i hated the most about this dining experience had to have been being served filthy plates, a cracked cup, and a grimy (absolutely disgusting) water jug with lukewarm tap water with no ice. This was one of the worst dining experiences i have ever had in my life. The other reviewer was right. This place is gross.
Not palatable and awful service. We received the worst service we can remember during our recent trip to this restaurant. After taking our order, the waitress spent the rest of the time talking with her friends and ignoring us. The food arrived in this order: entrees (no serving utensils), long delay, rice (after we had asked for it twice), long delay, 1 appetizer, long delay, 2nd appetizer. We had only side plates to eat off of, no cutlery was offered (although we are comfortable with the chopsticks, but usually restaurants offer our 4 year old a fork!) and the tea was served in plastic juice glasses. The food had decent flavour, although too salty for my taste, but the sauces were congealed and gummy, and the meat was more than half gristle and fat. The pot sticker fell apart as soon as it was picked up, and the green onion pancakes had very little green onion. The restaurant was also quite dirty, the floors looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in a while, with napkins under a lot of the tables, and grease and food particles on the walls. Very unappetizing, and makes me wonder about the cleanliness of the kitchen. If I waited to receive the bill I would still be there. And for half the meal a man who worked there, maybe the owner? walked around talking very loudly into his cell phone, while the incompetent waitresses giggled. This was a horrible dining experience.
Very large family style portions. Go with 3-4 people to share a few plates together. Authentic northern chinese food… Be adventurous and try something unique like pork ear. A good departure from canadianized Chinese food. Will be back to sample more plates 🙂 Beef n chive dumplings very good
