Meh pub food. Ordered Mediterranean calzone and most I can say about the taste is that it wasn’t offensive but admittedly I was expecting some flavour to penetrate my palate! The black olives, feta, tomatoes etc packed in the calzone were tasteless as was the side salad (i.e. so-so mixed greens tossed in a bland balsamic vinaigrette). On a positive note the service was good and so was my company.

Ok – let me tell you about The Wood. I LOVE THIS PLACE. We come every year to watch March Madness and the staff are always welcoming of our raucous crowd. Friendly atmosphere…it’s like Ottawa’s version of Cheers. The Wood Burger is great with its smoky bacon, cheese, mushrooms, caramelized onions and hot peppers. The Maple-roasted Pecan Salad is a fantastic change from the regular pub fare with its slices of Granny Smith apples, maple roasted pecans and feta cheese. This bar offers a nice range of beers including the hoppy Ashton IPA. They could probably boost their wine selection…but hey! It’s a pub. The food is good, but not overwhelmingly good, but better than your average bar. Grab a group of friends, head this welcoming bar and enjoy some sports. Great people watching too if seated at the front of the pub overlooking Wellington West. styledomination.com

Needs attention. Uh oh! Somebody has not invested enough time and money lately in to this place. The staff is great, the problem is the fact that they are using sub-par items in their recipes. Example is the calzone. They are using fake pizza grade sausage (you know the little white balls of fat) instead of real sausage they boast on their menu. Everything is an up-charge. When they say nothing comes with your fries, they mean it! No debit? I didn’t know that existed anymore. Bathrooms need a serious facelift, the faucets in the men’s room are all leaking at various degree and I’m sure it smells right in there.

Critque of The Wood. Upon entering, We saw a crowd of people. They were talking about Jalapeo poppers. We sat down in the corner but couldn’t see any of the screens. Then came time to decide on what we were going to order. Following much debate, we ordered a side salad (not to be shared), the wood pollo nachos and most importantly jalapeo poppers. The waitress must have confused our order because instead of bringing out jalapeo poppers she brought out deep fried awfulness. The poppers were very disappointing as they were oozing warm cream cheese with not much else. The highlight was the deep fry- that was done well. Side salad was good, they have a great dressing. Nachos were lacking, for $14 you would expect a heap of nachos. Where is the heap? Our advice is to not go hungry, thirsty is fine. How cold is that beer, am I right? Cold.

Nice place to watch a Game and Relax. The taps are clean and well kept unlike other bars close by on Wellington. Classy atmosphere wear you can dress casual. Good for young professionals that are sick of Elgin Street. The food is ok, wings are good and not greasy, burgers come with fries and a plain salad. Cider is good. Wine is a little over priced. Staff is very friendly and welcoming.

Service could be better. Short staffed makes for long wait on orders, service and bills. Been here for lunch and is very enjoyable. It would just be nice to staff properly for playoff hockey games. It’s the only place around to watch the game and very under staffed with a packed restaurant.
