Chez PiggyWe stopped by on the recommendation of a friend and enjoyed a delicious lunch. Two of us had burgers, very tasty, and one had the clubhouse. The food was very good, arrived quickly. Service was excellent as well. munchingqueen.wordpress.com
The patio alone is worth a 4 before the food even arrives. The whole family enjoyed their meals and the great setting. Nice that an institution continues to build on its reputation.
A very nice lunch with my wife today. It has been awhile since I’ve eaten here. She had a gluten free aioli pasta with chicken and I had cream of mushroom soup with a half sandwich of Artic Char and carrot salad. Everything was delicious. Service was excellent. Soup was fantastic and the sandwich was huge. The price was reasonable, $60 with tip, no alcohol. A great spot downtown with a lovely outdoor patio/courtyard.
Old favourite in need of new inspiration. Chez Piggy is one of those places that people, especially older Kingston residents, always tell you is great, or one of their favourite places. But they often haven’t been there for years. It’s not surprising that they should think this: Chez Piggy almost single-handedly started the revival of the donwtown Kingston restaurant scene. But it’s also not surprising that they haven’t been back recently: it has been resting on its laurels and riding its reputation for rather too long and is serious need of some updating. The good: Chez Piggy has one of the nicest patios in Kingston: it’s almost like a secret garden, and there is no better place downtown for a post-work glass of wine, or a cocktail, especially if you get there in time for happy hour. The wine list is small but well-chosen and the cocktails are excellent (although it could do with a better selection of beer). In the winter too, the old pine-clad stone building is a warm and welcoming place to escape the cold. Some of the food is also very good. For those of us who are semi-regulars, the regular staff remember you and are welcoming and attentive. The not-so-good. This comes down to three things: the food, the look of the place, and the attention to those who are not regulars. First, the food. As noted, some of the food can be very good, but a lot is also somewhat overpriced, unimaginative and takes a long time to arrive. The nadir are the fries, which are some of the biggest insults to the humble potato chip I have ever seen: strange brown twigs-like objects which appear to have been slowly drowned in oil rather than fried in it. Second, the look of the place. While the interior can be familiar and warm on a winter’s day, the rest of the time, it seems to be stuck in time in the 1970s, never the best period for interior design in the first place. Third, and finally, the staff can occasionally be a bit offhand to non-regulars.Overall: Chez Piggy is a much-loved local favourite that needs some new inspiration and some rethinking of its menu and its decor.
More for the ambiance then the food.. With a beautiful hidden courtyard to enjoy this european ambiance the Chez Piggy unfortunately didn’t ‘wow’ me with their food during my afternoon lunch visit. I tried a few dishes to get a feel for the food but was not overly impressed especially for the price that you are paying for each plate. Personally, I think this is a nice place to go and visit with friends and to enjoy some wine while passing the afternoon but not so much to visit just to get a quick bite to eat and leave.
Beautiful and romantic restaurant, especially the patio when the magnolia trees are blossoming in the spring. We ate here about a year and a half ago. Honestly the food wasn’t memorable. My fish baked in parchment paper with onions and peppers was under seasoned and the veggies were overlooked. I probably won’t return for the food, but maybe a nice drink in the patio with the beautiful trees.
Concept is there…. But my needs were not met. Place is swarming with bees, I was able to get over it… But so wrong. It’s over priced. They seem irritated to be serving you. They don’t have toast for breakfast? Or warm fresh bread? It is a bakery!!! It should have fresh out of the oven stuff? Cinnamon rolls? I will not venture into this pseudo bakery again…… No toast for breakfast …. Shame
