We were in Kingston visiting Queens, and while walking round, stopped at Stone City Ales. We were absolutely blown away with their speciality craft beers and ales. Easily some of the finest we’ve had, ever. Service was friendly, the ales were wonderful, the ambiance perfect as the evening set in. It was a great place to hang out, and while the patio was full, we found a great table overlooking the street. Would go back in a heartbeat. The ales we tried were the Yath Rock Gose a sour wheat with lime and minneola zest, with lemongrass, corainder and rock salt. Stunningly refreshing. The other was an incredibly smooth oatmeal stout a generous, velvet of a brew you can literally taste the nuts, the hint of tobacco come through. A delight. One of us had the awesome non alcoholic sparkling Joia sparkling grapefruit and cammomile drink. It was pure fresh, pure magic. That it was a warm summer evening added to the experience, and the guy who served us added to it all. Fantastic!

Kingston’s best craft beer. Stone City Ales is one of the best additions to Downtown Kingston in recent years. This microbrewery, bar and bottle shop – yes, you can get beer to take out! – is tucked into an unpromising-looking modern block but, in a nicely-designed space inside, they brew and serve some of the best craft beers in Ontario, let alone Kingston – and the prizes they’ve already won will back up my bold claim!. They are also slowly increasing the range of bar food they serve, some of which is quite imaginative, and people should look out for special collaboration evenings with local chefs and restaurants. More about the beer itself: there are always four ‘core’ beers available: ’12 Star’ Session Ale; ‘Windward’ Belgian Wheat Beer; the award-winning ‘Uncharted’ IPA; and ‘Ships in the Night’ Oatmeal Stout. All of these are very drinkable but it’s the ever-changing line-up of specials that really makes Stone City Ales a place to return to on a regular basis. The brewers here thankfully aren’t the slaves of fads and bizarre flavours, they just use the best local, Canadian and international ingredients to make a whole range of inventive, superb-tasting beers, with a particular growing specialism in the ‘saison’ style (traditional Belgian farmhouse beers using natural yeasts to give a particular refreshing sourness), but the current efforts at barrel-aged brews – you can see the barrels stacked up in the bar – should bear fruit from later in 2015 too.
