Went here on a whim and decided to try the small Halibut Fish & Chips as our server said it was there most popular dish. Have to say that she was right it was delicious and portion size was just enough. If you are a fish and chip lover you won’t be disappointed.
Happy little place – terrible food. Ordered the steak and kidney pie. Expected a little pie, perhaps with some puff pastry? $12 got me a plate of fries and a soggy, flat, (had to have been microwaved!) TINY wedge of pie smothered – like the fries – in thick brown gravy. I would be very surprised if this didn’t come out of a box. The flavour of the meat was hard to distinguish – everything just tasted like gravy. My companions had the fish and chips and were less than impressed.
Enjoyed the food and atmosphere. My family enjoyed eating at the Pilot House.(1) The steak and mushroom pie was great(2) The halibut fish and chips were great(3) We liked the ‘local’ and cozy feel to the restaurant; also, decent music and not too loud(4) The staff was very friendly
So-So Fish and Chips. We were in Kingston for the weekend and had heard good things about the Pilot House and their fish and chips. Being the gluttons we are, we stopped by on a sunny day and decided to give it a try. We ordered the cod and the halibut and had high expectations. The taste of the fish and chips was pretty standard, but we both agreed that the batter was much too thick and that a good fish and chip dish should have very light, but crispy batter. The fries were also pretty standard, I found them to be on the soggier side of things as well.Overall, looking for fish and chips? Kingston might not be the city for you – but if you must have some Pilot House might satisfy your craving.
The taxi driver (a reliable source of information on restaurants, usually) told me The Pilot House was famous for its Fish N Chips. There was no menu outside on display and the restaurant looked like it was closed in middle afternoon.I was standing outside about 10 feet from the walls and I could smell the distinctive smell of cheap cooking oil. I asked myself if it was possible for walls to be impermeated with cooking oil so much you were able to smell it from outside???
The atmosphere is cozy and the multiple televisions add to the sports bar feel but the food just didn’t cut it for me. I got the halibut dish with fries. The fish was so greasy and thickly breaded that I could only taste the oils soaking my palette. The fries were also subpar. I felt like I needed some vegetables so I ordered a small Caesar salad. The salad was also disappointing and tasted just as dense and oil-drenched as the fish. The lettuce was limp from too much dressing. Sadly to say, my water was the best part of my meal. Maybe if I had ordered a club sandwich…
