***TIP: No Lunch Menu on Sundays. Best to come with a group of at least 2+ people and share or else you are paying $20+pp without wine/dessert!***White table cloth + wine glasses on table type of place. No Mario’s BBQ here, although atmosphere is neither pretentious nor is the waitstaff snobby. For any of you who have dined at Aioli, I’d say that this place is the Portuguese version of the Italian standby in Mississauga! Seems quite authentic as the majority of the diners were Portuguese and came with their families.I haven’t been here in almost a decade, but nice to see that the food is still good & so is the service. Nice place to go out for dinner to celebrate a special occasion OR if you’re Portuguese, take your family there for a traditional Sunday lunch and spend a coupla hours eating, drinking wine, catching up, & watching the soccer game on tv.We ordered the Bacalau a Bras (sorta like an omelette with cod fish & shoestring potatoes) & Stuffed Chicken Breast (w/ raisins/dried figs). Both mains were ~$20 and chicken was really good! The Bacalau was good too, but quite traditional, so if you don’t feel like eating an omelette, I’d order something else. It would’ve been better for sharing.Again, nice Portuguese sitdown, good service, & great food at decent prices!
This place touts itself as high end Portuguese food. I’ve been here twice now as my in-laws are Portuguese and wanted to do something special for 2 separate occasions. The food is really a hit or miss. The first time the mussels were great, the second time the sauce they were cooked in was poorly executed (tasted highly acidic with too much white wine). The cataplana (a pot of seafood medley) was less than desirable unless your a hardcore Portuguese immigrant and seafood enthusiast. The food in general is soaking in sauces and you never know if it’ll be good or not. The soups are good, but their portions are huge so keep that in mind as you plan your meal. The place is also very small and typically caters to large groups celebrating a special occasion. That being said you’re most likely going to be crowded and the service will take FOREVER. We were starving and ended up over eating bread instead of our main meal. My significant other and I originally wanted to order the seafood rice only to wait forever to be served and when we asked they said minimum 1 hour wait to make it. It’s not written on the menu and no one mentions it to you when you sit down. Had we known, we would’ve ordered it shortly after we got there to ensure we could get it in time. At that point we were so hungry there was no way we were going to delay getting food for that long. Overall, never coming back here. Tries to be more than it actually delivers.
I decided to try this spot even though it’s more of a steakhouse/seafood spot… From lookingat the online menu I was assuming the only thing I could eat wasa salad orsome kind of veggies. Then I spoke to the waiter andasked if they could accommodate me with a veggie pasta.. They told me they only use 2 sauces for their pastas- which is cream sauce and tomato sauce with veggies in it… So I decided to choose thecream sauce with a penne and add mushrooms… Unfortunatley as beautiful as it looked, it did not taste very good at all but I still ate it because I was hungry. Even a little butter or salt would have went a long way… It tasted extremely bland and the cream sauce was watery and barely sticking to the pasta… The mushrooms were very wild and tasted kind of muddy… I’m sure if I got something they specialize in, I would have enjoyed myself but options for me were limited and I don’t blame them. Also, the bread they brought out was kind of hard in texture but still ok.. Nota fan of theonion/cheese dip thing or the black olives. It just wasn’t my thing… And the server wasnot the greatestbut to be fair, he wasrunning a one man show onthe floor with a lot of tables at a busy lunch hour. But the hostess was super nice and sweet. Lastly, the skin on the lemon of my water smelled a little strong – don’t know how to describe it , but it was overpowering (it’s like a natural lemon skin scent)… but anyway the dcor is cute and I wasn’t charged anything crazy for my pasta – I pay more at Jack Astors when I substitute the chicken for mushrooms. However it does look like a fine dining spot with prices to match for their regular items.
Bad Service.. My family has been to Leao DOuro a few times now because the food is very good for the value, so we decided to go there with the rest of the family before the grandparents left for Portugal. It was a Saturday night and there were 18 of us and we all left with the same thought; the food was mostly good but the service was horrible. We made 3 separate orders of wine before we chose one that was in stock. The restaurant should think of updating their wine list, or inform the waiters which bottles are out of stock. When pouring the wine, the waiter would spill droplets all over the table and on us. He either didnt notice or didnt care enough to apologize. I wasnt having wine that evening and I now have a red wine stain on my blouse. The waiter never came around to ask us if we were ok with our drinks, wanted another or if we were enjoying our meals. The manager was also nowhere to be found. Typically managers of a restaurant will come around to check on a table, especially large parties. I guess they dont care if youre enjoying your evening or not. When it came time to ordering dessert it all went further downhill…The majority of the table ordered the chocolate mousse. The waiter began serving our dessert orders, distributing only 2 orders of mousse, returned to inform the rest of the table that they were out. The children who ordered the mousse and were not able to have it were upset at the 2 people at the table that were served the mousse. They were also upset to see the table beside us receive orders of chocolate mousse later. The waiter should have either informed us beforehand that they were out, or he should have let us know that there were only 2 orders of mousse left and so that we could decide who would have it. The other dessert item that we ordered was the Natas Do Ceu. Luckily they had enough to fill our order, unfortunately 3 of them were were raw and runny and had to be sent back. Ive had the Natas Do Ceu there before, I know how it should taste and what the texture should be like. We replaced them with 2 orders of chocolate cake and cheesecake. I realized there was Crme Brule on the menu, and asked the waiter to change the order, and he rolled his eyes at me! He returned with chocolate cake and told me there was no more Crme Brule. To top it all off, HE CHARGED US for the three Natas Do Ceu that we sent back.I dont understand why our table was treated this way, the meal went on one bill we didnt complain nor gave him a difficult time for the quality of the service which he provided us with. We were looking forward to that evening and its unfortunate that our expectations were not met. I would not recommend having a large party at this restaurant.
The best quality and best bang for the buck.very clean.not a fast food place.everything is done at the time you order.Great wines and prices
One of the last good authentic Portuguese restaurants left on the GTA
Worth It. Portuguese fine dining is a bit of a oxymoron (Portuguese food is, after all, wonderfully rustic, and the best comes out of someone’s home kitchen) but that’s what you get at Leao D’Ouro, and they make a good case for it. I’m all for grilled chicken with piri-piri sauce, but that’s not all Portuguese food has to offer. Here, you can get other things like grilled octopus, pork with clams and tripe stew prepared very, very well. The prices can be a bit high, but it’s worth a trip.
