Cheap eats gem in London that also has amazing food! Gyros and Greek menu. I discovered this tiny little restaurant after moving into a nearby neighborhood. My boyfriend and I are always eager to eat at new restaurants, especially if they are affordable and offer ethnic cuisines. Avra is mostly a take-out operation with a few seats for dining in. The menu is small and offers Mediterranean fare like gyros, souvlaki, Greek salad and spanakopita, but there are also Canadian mainstays like burgers, fish and chips, and roasted chicken. The prices are so low that you question if they’re making any money. My boyfriend always gets the gyros combo which is $6.50 and includes a bowl of homemade soup (usually chicken and rice but also other varieties), Greek salad, a chicken gyro and fries. I’m vegetarian so alway go with the spanakopita or Greek salad, but have to admit the spanakopita is one of the best spinach pies I’ve had in London: a huge portion with delicious filling and browned, flaky and crispy filo. The pie is $4.50 alone (unheard of at the other Greek restaurants in the city), and the owner charged me $5.50 to make it a combo with salad and fries. The food is fresh and homemade, and most importantly, delicious. The prices are absurdly low. Check this place out and you won’t be sorry! Hamilton Road is on the upswing and there are a number of delicious and affordable restaurants popping up. Don’t miss out.
