What a wonderful restaurant in the heart of down town London. Old World charm, great friendly service. The food; specifically the spaetzle and meats were amazing. Great music and comedy from a young man who made you feel like a part of the family. Dont let this one get past you without experiencing it!
Amazing, quirky place still run by the same owner for more than 60 years. Marika is the Hungarian princess of the kitchen as well as the main comedy act on the floor – amazing lady who was far ahead of her time. Wide variety of eastern European dishes and desserts that will not disappoint. Great german beer on tap too. You can almost imagine steeping back in time at this emporium of food and kitsch,
2018/11/14Budapest Restaurant was close to our hotel, and it looked like a good spot for dinner. Four of us arrived shortly after 6:30 on a Wednesday evening, and the restaurant was mostly empty. I was struck by all the red decor. Red broadloom, chairs, table linen, drapery, valences, and more. Lots of photos, plates, and other knick-knacks hanging on the walls. SWBMO and I started out by sharing a Perogies appetizer ($8.95). Two deep-fried Perogies, with a seasoned potato filling, topped with sour cream and bacon bits. They were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and they were a nice size. However, for the price I thought the portion could be bigger. SWBMO ordered the Chicken Schnitzel ($20.95), but she was served a Chicken Paprikash instead. We brought it to our servers attention immediately. She apologized, left the plate on purpose, and said she would bring a schnitzel shortly. Less than 10 minutes later she brought the schnitzel with a few potatoes. The intent was that she would eat the sides on the first plate (coleslaw, spaetzle), and have the schnitzel. I think it would have been better to take the first plate back to the kitchen, and bring out one plate with the correct request. SWMBO said that her schnitzel was just okay. I chose the Transylvania Blintz ($20.95), which was a pork schnitzel, rolled up and served inside a crepe, with a light, semi-sweet mustard sauce. An interesting take on a schnitzel. The coleslaw, spaetzle, and French fry sides were pretty good. Lots of carbs on that plate. Except for brining out the one incorrect entree, the service was pretty good.
This was my first Hungarian dining experience. I visited when they had a special $25 for 4 course meal. Ignoring the soup and apply since they may not be on the regular menu, i had the Hungarian platter. There was a lot of food and some variety but it just wasn’t good on my palate. I didn’t find anything outstanding in taste (my way of saying bland). From soup to the end, everything was the same colour scheme (brown to red) but perhaps this is part of their cultural cooking? The restaurant has seating for pleasant and relatively private conversation. The owner sits in the back of the restaurant watching what goes on. Lots of cultural decorations in this place! The pictures attached are – cabbage soup, lecso (rice, like risotto), Hungarian platter, Hungarian cheese cake.
Not entirely impressed with the food in this restaurant. I feel like a terrible person to give a not as good review because the old lady got to be 100 and she’s super nice and still roaming around asking how the food is. I find it bland and not very memorable. Restaurant itself is very old and stuffy but i think that’s a part of the charm.
Ive driven past this restaurant Many , many times, but never went in. This past wednesday i went on a double date for dinner, and i have to say i really enjoyed it as a change of my normal restaurant adventures. The atmosphere was kind of dark, but i thought it was very cozy. The place is larger than you think because the restaurant is long and narrow. Service was fine, but there were so few people it would be hard to mess up. There was some occasional electronic keyboard music which i thought was nice, both the owner and and keyboard player came and spoke to us. The owner is an older woman who has been running the place for ages, she has lost her filter and said a few things that prude’s would consider strange, however our table was full of laughter, and I enjoyed being called a sexy man :)The food was heavy and very filling, which is what i expect from central/eastern european cuisine. I especially enjoyed the goulash and schnitzel. My girlfriend really enjoyed the bean soup. The palacinka was great too, and you don’t see that often in london ontario. If i have to breakdown my rating, I would do it like this:Service: 4/5Food:4.5/5Atmosphere:3.5/5 –> atmosphere is very dated, but I really don’t care, I’m there for the food and the company I was with.TL:DR: Go to this restaurant at least once, it was good food and you wont go broke.I have no affiliations with this restaurant whatsoever, I will be returning.
Awesome place t try something new. Best place to take a date….Go for the platter!
