Came in just for the Obama Cookies. Got a Justin Trudeau one and while it was a touristy thing to do to order one, I felt a lot of Canadian pride as I ate it haha! Tasty sugar cookie!
This place seems to get a mixed reception: you either love it or hate it!Yes, it’s in the Byward market (and rents must be high). No, it isn’t the cheapest bakery. Yes, I get that ‘Obama’ thing is a bit gimmicky. Some may call this a ‘tourist trap’.But these guys know their baking!Where to begin…… the vast glass cases with tempting array of sweet and (a few) savoury options, the tasty brioche and Danishes, their home-made meat pies, fresh sandwiches…. try it all with the cheap and decent coffee- all in all, a great place for a weekend lunch in the Market.PS-As for the service, it is fast and efficient: I am anglophone (and a South Asian) and I’ve never felt anything amiss (unlike some other posters here).
The Obama cookie is basically a sugar cookie with icing, a not very good sugar cookie I must add. We also ordered the fruit tart which was delicious with a latte that was served in a bowl. Cute but not a fan, no one needs like 20 ounces of latte. We got some danishes to go and they are dry, bland and overpriced. Definitely riding the Obama fame still from years ago, and with the ideal location that’s why it is still standing.
Great spots lots of fun. Croissants was not worth the price. Might rank up there as the worst I have ever eaten. Let’s hope the do better. Save your money and move on.
Like most tourists, we chose to come for the Obama Cookies. Like most tourists, we paid an overpriced amount for this experience!Upon reading the reviews, my family chose to order a Trudeau Cookie (classical), the Almond Croissant, and the Chocolate Almond Croissant. The Almond Croissant was overly sweet (according to my parents, for I did not try the actual product myself). The Chocolate Almond Croissant was likewise, but it was a bit better as the chocolate acted as the main sweetener, and the almond parts were very rich. My main complaint would have to be that the lower part of the pastry was soaked and wet, which ruined its texture and taste. The Trudeau Cookie turned out to be a good and hearty shortbread cookie (we picked away at the icing – in case you haven’t noticed, my family are not big fans of sweets). I then ordered an Abricot Brioche to consume by myself (I copied the order of a friend). It was good, but I spent a good couple minutes picking away at the rocks of salt on the surface (super sticky and sweet). I also left the entire custard center area, which was too heavy and sweet for my liking. It’s more of a tourist experience, and I probably won’t come again! 🙂
One of the first things you see when you enter the Byward Market – an overwhelming selection of baked goods and Obama cookies (which they are still clinging onto as their claim to fame, 8 years after the fact haha.. it’s tacky yes but cute in a way). It’s large and spacious, the staff are very friendly. The New York Cheesecake is great – just the right amount of softness and not too sweet. I love their eclairs. Not an out-of-this world bakery, but nice and convenient location.
Hmm a little confusing. Not sure why the place is covered in Obama paraphernalia, the claim to fame that he came in and ate a cookie? Simply bizarre. Get over it and please take it down it’s not a good look. On another note the selection of cakes etc is very extensive. I had a beef stew lunch with mash potatoes which wasn’t bad, meat was a little tough but wasn’t expecting much. An easy stop in spot for a coffee and cake type affair whilst visiting the market. Enjoy!
