2019/04/02A friend recommended Sidedoor, so I decided to go there for dinner. It is a large restaurant situated in an old stone building. The dining room is multi-level, and about 20 percent of it extends beyond the old building walls, under a glass structure that looks a bit like a greenhouse. It seats more than 100 and was much less than half full when I arrived around 6 pm. When I left it was almost half full. They have a happy hour menu from 4:30 pm to 6:30 which included various appetizers and $2 off wine by the glass, so I started out with a glass of Malbec. The main menu was sectioned into Tacos, Chef Plates, Sides and Sweet. I focused on the Chef Plates, which was a combination of appetizers and mains. The majority of the items had an Asian influence, and several items had Mexican twists. After discussing with my server about portion sizes, I chose Green Papaya Salad ($14) as my appetizer. The papaya was julienned and mixed with with cashews, a little bit of shredded carrot, a sweet and sour dressing, and topped with a straw-like nest of crispy taro. It tasted sweet, tangy and fresh. For my main dish I picked the AAA Striploin ($36). It was served with Chinese broccoli, salsa, whole roasted garlic cloves and almonds. The steak was cooked medium rare, was tasty although a bit chewy. The other ingredients added crunch and flavour. Service was very good.
