Bring some friends who are willing to share the desserts with you!I went with two other friends and ordered 4 different items in total and split the cost. We were able to try all the matcha desserts and it came out to ~$8 each.We found out that it was best to start with the least matcha tasting dessert to the most. Furthermore, it was best to start with the denser dishes then continue to the lighter ones. We came up with the following eat order:- Matcha cheesecake. It would blow your mind in terms of the balance between cheese and matcha. Superb! Would reorder indefinitely!!- Matcha tart. This dessert was more potent in terms of matcha flavour. The crust itself imo was too sweet. Would not reorder.- Matcha rolls. Soft cake with matcha cream. It was a delight to switch from the dense desserts to the soft. We decided it is best to eat this 3rd because the tart would taste too dense and dry after indulging in the brilliant lightness of the rolls. May reorder due to the fact that you can probably find this dessert in TnT.- Lastly, dive into the heavenly matcha crepes. This dessert had the most matcha. Super soft crepes with delicious matcha cream. It is best to eat this last because if you go back to the cheese cake and tart, you would find the two too dry and dense and overall not pleasing. If you go back to the rolls, the rolls would taste less flavourful. Due to how potent the matcha was in the crepes, it might taste a hint of grassiness. A must reorder! My favorite dishes were the cheesecake and the crepes. A definite must try!Overall, I enjoyed my experience at uji cafe. Not all the items from the menu were perfect but for $8, it was definitely worth the visit. Would come here over cacao 70 a thousand times over!
Ottawa’s first Japanese cafe servicing cheese egg tarts, layered matcha cake, Japanese Cheese cakes and more. The Japanese Cheese Cake was OK nothing very special that’s worth bragging about or recommending. The cheesecake was too dense and too sweet, wasn’t light creamy and soft as the other Japanese cheesecakes I’ve tried at other locations. Matcha latte was way too sweet with the amount of sugar syrup they used taking away from the matcha flavour… overall meh experience.
Delightful cafe with delicious matcha lattes and carefully crafted cheese tarts. The food and drinks are a bit pricey, but the quality of those items are top notched.
So happy that such a pleasant and quaint cafe has come to Ottawa! I highly recommend the mille crepe – it’s expensive ($9 for a slice), but SO worth it – it’s a thinly layered crepe crake with a creamy matcha filling. The other flavours include strawberry, mango and chocolate. They also have a Japanese cheesecake, which is no match for Uncle Tetsu’s in Toronto, but is good for Ottawa standards. Lovely atmosphere and lovely staff. Worth the visit.
This place really surprised me. Uji cafe is beautiful inside, a place you really just want to sit and hang out at. It’s on Rideau st hidden amongst shawarma shops, thrift stores, and construction. My friends and I shared a pot of tea (4$ and free refills, the three of us each had 2 cups), and about 4 pieces of cake. The mille crepe is expensive but AMAZING. They were giving out free samples of cheesecake too. I think they could use more variety in their cakes, I would get bored eating the same cakes everytime. But if you love matcha, and taking pictures of your food, this is the perfect place.
