2018/09/28Zaks Cantina is next door to Zaks Diner. We had eaten at their 50s style diner several years ago, so this time we decided to try their Mexican restaurant. There are several things you might notice when you enter the restaurant. The first thing is the front of a bus inside the front door. Then there are lots and lots of colours, mostly from the small Mexican posters that are used extensively as wallpaper. Then there is the rest of the bus. About a third of the dining room is taken up by an old school bus, where the interior has been converted into a dining room with about a ten booths. When we arrived the restaurant was much less than half full, and we chose a booth in the bus. SWBMO chose the Chicken Enchiladas and the Chicken Tortilla Soup as her side dish. She really liked the soup, with a hearty broth, some corn and beans, and shredded chicken. The enchiladas were wrapped in flour tortillas and covered with their house made enchilada sauce. The sauce was was a thick, dark mole that had a fairly strong kick of spice. While SWMBO loves most moles, this one was a bit too hot, so I helped her finish the sauce. I opted for the Chicken Burrito and Onion Rings as my side. I thought that the rings was an odd offering in a Mexican restaurant, but they were nicely done. The burrito was filled with chicken, beans (refried and black), corn, salsa, guac and cheese. On top was a red sauce and crema. Pretty good flavour profile. Service was pretty good.

The service was slow even though they werent busy. The food was mediocre; salsa was tasteless needed salt. Atmosphere was welcoming, spacious, and interestingly designed. Best part of the evening was the beer!
