My husband, son and I traveled to Toronto for some much needed Asian foodstuffs and seafood. I really craved some Japanese food but little Tokyo was too far away from our last stop (seafood depot) and we were already completely exhausted from a day of driving in the congested city. I settled on this place because it had pretty good reviews on Google. The food was (thank you Google) pretty good. You order on an iPad, as with so many AYCE places these days. I thought the sashimi was fresh and nicely portioned. My husband enjoyed the fried salmon belly and the chicken katsu. Being a new eater of sushi, he said the sushi was fine and almost everything seemed well-prepared. Also, the food came really fast after ordering which was great since we were really hungry. One thing we completely agreed on was how terrible the tacoyaki (octopus in pancake-like batter) was. It was done on the outside and completely raw inside. It tasted like a mouthful of raw batter, and I couldnt detect octopus in the mush. I thought the food was fine. I found it to be a small step up from other AYCE places in the same culinary category. I was a little disappointed in the taste of the eel (not really kissed by flame, just warmed a little it seemed) and the sauce was bland, not great for my usually favourite dish. I was also a little put out by the ratio of rice to spicy salmon mix in the nigiri sushi. There was a ton of rice. We find it a common theme that the service in these types of restaurants is lacking. This restaurant was no different. The servers continually looked at the floor as they scurried about, placing and picking up dishes. We had no success at flagging down a server for our sons fork, then knife, then our water refills. We actually had to go to the kitchen area where waiters congregated to obtain these items. When my husband paid, the waiter was very surprised and exclaimed before the transaction was done, oh you forgot to add a tip! Normally, we tip at the table. In our world, servers need to earn a tip. I know this is controversial for some, but it doesnt really take much to impress us. A few words while we were eating would have sufficed and being able to get anyones attention when we needed … well, attending.I suppose we could go back there in a pinch but honestly, there are so many of these kinds of places out there that I dont foresee that proverbial pinch happening. My husband liked it more than I did.

I rarely write reviews for restaurants, either positive or negative, but I have to share my experience at Ichiki. My wife, young daughter (under 2), and my self went to Ichiki for dinner. Weve been to this restaurant many times before and would consider it to be a go to restaurant for us. This particular occasion my daughter got sick at the table just as soon as the food started to come out (only 4-5 small dishes were brought to the table). I apologized to the wait staff and told them to cancel the rest of my order because we would be able to stay for the meal. After the waitress poorly cleaned the floor I asked what I owe for the minimal food that was brought to the table. The waitress said that they had to charge me for one full adult dinner totaling over $30. She said it was to cover the cost of foodthere was two seaweed salads, 8 pieces sashimi, one miso soup, and one ramen soup$30 seems a little excessive for so little. I understand I had to and was willing to pay something for the food that came to the table and the 7 minutes spent sitting at the table, but not that much. I will not be dining at Ichiki ever again because compassion and customer service is beneath this establishment.

My friends and I came here after work to enjoy the bento box. I had the chicken teriyaki bento box and the portions of everything was generous for the price. The interior is beautiful as well and service is quick. The food tastes good and the dishes complimented each other. We didn’t try the all you can eat menu so I cannot judge it yet. I may come back to try one of their other options soon!
