2019/05/18We were near Vaughan Mills at dinner time, driving past several restaurants, and we decided on The Captains Boil. Although the restaurant was not full, we were told it would be at least a 20 minute wait. We werent in a rush, so we added our name to the list. We did get our table at around the 20 minute mark, but several tables sat empty during that whole time. There seemed to be enough servers, so my only conclusion is that they are not that efficient at maximizing the table usage. After looking over the menu for a few minutes SWMBO picked the Fried Shrimp Basket, with about a dozen medium sized breaded shrimp. The batter was crispy, the shrimp was sweet and tender, and there were a couple of dipping sauces to adjust the flavours. I decided to have a feature Catch. You choose your Catch and I chose Shrimp. I picked Captains Boil sauce for Flavour (a combination of their Cajun, lemon pepper and garlic sauces) and added corn. There was about a pound of in-the-shell, head-on shrimp, served in a bag, with the sauce, including half a cob of corn. You put on a plastic bib, thin plastic gloves, there is no plate, and you work for your dinner. I am not into shrimp heads, so I pulled those off and tossed them in the trash bucket on the table, and spent quite a while removing the shells and legs. The shrimp was tender, the spice had flavour, but for me this was too much work for my dining pleasure.
This is my second Captain’s Boil location visit and fourth seafood-boil type restaurant since discovering them in Toronto. It was just amazing! The Captain’s seasoning, which is a combination of all of the options, is addictive. If you’re so inclined you might even want to order some garlic bread and sop up some of the deliciousness! For us it’s shrimps, clams, snow crabs, and lobster. In the future we’ll give the king crab a try too. The lobster bisque was very good but in the presence of the intense flavor of the seafood almost tastes bland by comparison, though on its own I doubt that would be the case.A bit pricey but worth it for the occasional treat!
