i love this store for all its variety however was thrown for a loop when i ordered their vegetarian lasagna for my family christmas event. i pre-ordered the large 59.99 version and it was ready on time. i took it home and thought i’d of course take a peak before sliding it into the oven. WOW – it looked like a shepherd’s pie and i thought they had mixed up the order. but upon closer examination, it wasn’t – this was their idea of ‘vegetarian’. they used frozen peas, carrots, corn and green beans as the ‘vegetable’! i was aghast and completely embarrassed as all i ever do is brag about this great little italian store in our city. i was stuck with nothing else to serve.i did visit the store the next available day and chatted with the owner. he spoke with the catering manager and they chatted about maybe changing things with eggplant but were a definite no on the addition of spinach (??) – they seemed to however indicate that they will be changing their recipe.bottom line for me is to let others know to ask nicastro’s what the ingredients are in the vegetarian lasagna if you plan to order this from them. if they don’t change this – DO NOT buy this. firstly it is not worth the 59.99 and the flavour … well you can guess! see the picture below.
I tried their sandwiches which were quite delicious and reasonably priced, and a welcomed change from the usual subway or quizno’s fare. I also tried their lattes, which, were disappointing. I’d get a sandwich there again, but we would pass on the coffee. I expected a bit more from an Italian place in that regard. On a side note, they carry a great double smoked bacon.
Nice Grocery Store and Friendly Staff.I do a lot of my shopping here, they have a lot of great cured meats and good quality import items. The sandwich is delicious for 6 bucks, but i will say the quantity of meat you receive will vary greatly based on the staff member making your sandwich.
Don’t come for the sandwiches. Generally I like this place for their selection in Italian groceries, but I’ve been here twice for take out sandwiches and were disappointed both times. I only came here because a coworker raved about how great these sandwiches are, but they skimped on toppings making it taste more like bread and mustard. Its nothing special. I can’t vouch for their hot dishes that they serve. What I do recommend is coming here for their unique groceries, and in particular these coffee flavoured candies called ‘Sperlari Lavazza – Ripene al caffe’. They’re amazing for any coffee lover
Excellent takeout food. I pick up lunch about once a month and have never been disappointed. Delicious homemade soups, sandwiches, and their chili is the best!
