Falafel, Shawarma, Kebobs and more. Belle is hidden in plain sight, and will appeal to those looking for modern middle eastern cuisine.I stopped in for lunch today with my brother. He ordered the Shawarma Plate, which came with chicken shawarma, beets, cole slaw and red cabbage. Based on how he devoured the whole thing, I would say that he liked it. I had the lunch-sized Lula Kebob, which was a skewer of nicely seasoned ground beef. On the side I had a house salad as well as their home fries, which were very thinly sliced potatoes, almost like potato chips, with dill and salt. I’d go back.I have to add a bit of a personal story here. More than 40 years ago there was a restaurant at this location called Ernie’s Chicken House. I was one of their delivery guys, driving one of their distinctive orange VW Beetles. This was my first real summer job and my staring wage was $1.65/hour. Fond memories.

At the intersection of Finch/Bathurst, Belle Restaurant would be a very good choice for Middle Eastern cuisine with an emphasis on kebobs, shawarma, as well as Russian and Israeli additions such as salads. We had had Khinkhali which are lovely and moist Georgian dumplings filled with lamb mince. I found them to be lighter on the stomach than other dumplings that I had elsewhere (probably heavier/fattier meat). The Harcho soup included lamb, coriander, onions and chilli peppers yet it was not too spicy in the end. The lamb had fat pieces attached yet some might enjoying eating the whole thing. Its good to have it for the cooking process and leave it up to you to remove the fat if desired. I then had the lamb shish kebob cooked as requested. You can choose between rice, fries and home-style potatoes. I chose the latter and highly recommend it. At the table we also had the tasty Lula kebob which featured skewers of lean ground meat and chicken kebob. The accompanied sauce was home-made and included tomatoes, coriander, onions and other flavorful spices and herbs. For lunch we didnt really feel or need any dessert yet that menu was limited anyway. Lunch portions are large enough and served with garden salad with a light dill dressing in a separate container as well as pita bread. Dinner portions are probably huge and if you have a few people together, you probably would want to consider a party platter and really have a feast. The service was a bit uneven today in terms of customer service tact yet our main focus was on a quick delicious meal rather than a complete eating experience.
