If you live in the Yonge and Finch/Sheppard area, chances are youve heard about Sushi Bong, a small eatery thats attached to the base a condo complex. To call it a restaurant would be a stretch, theres three tables that could fit 10 people total so most customers will just get takeout. Online reviews generally credit the place for great food at cheap prices; Ive been meaning to go for years but never made it in during their limited weekend hours. On a chance weekday lunch, the opportunity finally presented itself an opportunity I wish never happened.Being a first visit, I decided to go big with the Sushi Bong Special ($10.62), a dish that turned out to be a behemoth platter filled with a California roll, 4 pieces of salmon roll, and 5 pieces of sushi. The salmon looked a bit soft, but otherwise everything was presented nicely. Then, I noticed a stack of boxes from a delivery that just occurred. On the bottom, sat two big boxes marked with ESCOLAR. If you dont know why I have such an adverse reaction to seeing this word, pick up a copy of Larry Olmsteds Real Food Fake Food, a must read for

Just came for sushi I spent 20.00 and hated it. It was disgusting the whole thing tasted like wasabi I was extremely disappointed and had to throw out my salmon I couldn’t even finish 4 pieces I was grossed out. The rice portion was extremely small and the salmon was just thick and extra chewy I couldn’t even break it apart it was awful. The customer service is a little crappy too.

The best things this place has going for it are the *super* speedy service and the low prices. We dined in, but the majority of their customers ordered food to-go. The pick-up line was a steady stream of ins and outs. The food arrives in minutes after you order. The food itself is alright; you get the quality you’re paying for. The rice is not consistently sticky and the sashimi is not extremely fresh. The tea is self-serve and there is only enough space for 3 dine-in tables inside. Probably wouldn’t return, but glad that I got to try it.

I always come here if I am craving some quick sushi rolls. The rolls here are so big! An added plus is that they are so well priced. A gigantic dynamite roll with 8 large pieces is around $6! One roll is usually enough to feed me. Downside is that the shop is super small (only 2 tables) and the cashier/waitress is usually very blunt/unfriendly. I guess that’s what happens since they are always so busy.

Ordered takeout, was pleasantly surprised when they said it would only take 10 min. Ordered the dragon roll, green onion make, and Bongs sashimi. Green onion maki was delicious, and the toasted sesame seeds on the maki and dragon roll added a delicious taste. More than enough food for 2 people, at a very reasonable price. Had a bit of leftovers.Very small place but by the looks of it, lots of turnover and therefore fresh fish. 3 sushi makers working at the time and they looked busy, there were a few people in line for pickup and 2 groups at the 3 table restaurant eating. Only difficulty would be finding parking, there is pay parking just outside. Can’t wait to try their spider roll, shrimp tempura, next! Also excited they have a second location at world on yonge.
