I struggled thinking of a rating for this restaurant. When looking at it objectively, I don’t think this is the worst restaurant in the city, as my one-star rating would imply. One of the five courses I had was decent, and one was even downright great. So, why the one-star? I simply cannot think of another restaurant I’d rather not go to. Let me explain:The price per serving here is as you would expect: Astronomical. The portion sizes were small, and are conducive towards getting a 5 course meal. With this in mind, your only real option he is to get the $59 option. So, that will be my reference point:Let’s start with the bread. I usually go to a restaurant on Preston and expect the bread to be home-made, which, thankfully, it was here! Great, right? No. Maybe this is a preference think, but I like my bread not hilariously undercooked to the point of shapeable dough. But, that’s okay, this one was free and it might be a preference thing! 0/1First course: I have to admit, I’m not 100% sure what this was, but they seemed like breaded balls with beets. Since they were so small and inoffensive, there’s really not much to say here. It didn’t wow me, it didn’t offend me. Fairly average. 0/2Second course: Wow. It was just cheese wrapped is prosciutto, and was definitely the highlight. This was amazing, and gave me hope that the rest of the night was going to go much better. It was simple, seasoned, and tasted great. Well done. 1/3Third course: I was most excited for this one. Gnocchi. Homemade. This is a slam dunk, right? Nope! Of all the dishes, this one hurt the most. Setting aside the wait time for this item (Which I never mind in a restaurant, stuff happens, I would rather get quality than expedience), it was just bad. I’m not sure if this is supposed to happen, but the Gnocchi was almost spongey. And maybe that’s a preference thing as well, but it just had no flavour. Whatever sauce that was used was almost grocery store quality, and I say almost because at least grocery stores put in seasoning into their sauces (Granted, way too much). The gnocchi was bad, and I almost want to take away a point from the previous course for just how disappointed I was. 1/4Fourth course: Sirloin steak. You CANNOT mess this up. Luckily, they didn’t. It was a very good steak and had it been complimented by other competent courses, it would have been a stellar end to the meal. No real complaints here, other than the mostly undercooked asparagus but my expectations have been so thoroughly lowered I cannot possibly take that away from this dish. 2/5Fifth course: It was dessert, I’m not really a big fan of desserts. It left an absolutely brutal after-taste in my mouth, but I am going to assume that was a combination of the wine and the dessert just not being a great pair. I won’t take away a point here, but I can’t give it a full point, since it didn’t give me any reason to do so. 2.5/6The wine: So… Yeah, the wine was good! Very good, even! You could argue they did a great job of curating bottles of wine, but I feel as if I could easily do that as well with a 5 minute google search. I don’t think buying wine available externally warrants giving the restaurant any sort of praise, but I also can’t criticize it.I have some minor quibbles. The lock on one of the bathroom doors is broken. Maybe not a huge complaint, but there is no indication that the washrooms are even being used, so this will result in an awkward encounter eventually. Getting back to my rating, why a one-star? I had to give it this because the experience from top-to-bottom, taken as a whole, was the worst restaurant experience I have had in Ottawa. Sure, this is objectively better than a place like East Side Mario’s, but if the question becomes where would I rather go, considering price and food quality? I’d pick East Side Mario’s. I’d pick anywhere else. I expect to receive bad food at a chain restaurant, but I also expect that my wallet will come out relatively intact. Here, I received bad food, and the restaurant received a disproportionate amount of money from me. This is why I have to give this a one-star. This is the restaurant I would put last on my list of places to go in Ottawa, and from that alone, I feel it deserves the one-star rating.
Great culinary experience… open concept kitchen made us feel part of the action! Staff very helpful in the selection of the perfect combination of plates. Totally impressed about flavour/taste as well as presentation of each dish ordered. Also really enjoyed the wine suggested.
We celebrated a birthday and an anniversary the night we visited Davino’s and it was excellent! We ordered the special and we were not disappointed. We sat at the chefs table and could watch them prepare everything. The service was great, the owner and his wife do an amazing job of making you feel taken care of. They allowed me to make a substitution- I wanted the beef tartar- delicious! If you have food allergies this is the place to go- they will do whatever it takes to modify their menu for you. This place will not disappoint you. You order courses and they are smaller portions but we left stuffed. If you don’t want 5 courses, you can order slightly larger portions of starch and mains- one person at our table did this and they were satisfied. The menu changes frequently. Definitely will be back!
A taste of wine, a taste of great Italian food, enjoy and repeat… This turned into a meal, a lot of laughs with my friends, an education from the owner. A great night for 40 of my friends and acquaintances. I would do it all over again, great time.
Just had an amazing dinner here tonight! We were a large group of 17, every course was unique, flavourful and well balanced. The wait staff were attentive and my water/wine glasses were never empty! Wine selection was interesting and unique. The manager was personable and really went over and above to make us feel welcome and comfortable. We will be back!
I’m definitely a meat and potatoes type when it dining out, however I must say I was very pleasantly surprised. Menu was on the pricey however it was made up for with delicious foods and amazing drinks. Staff were great and extremely friendly. I ll be back!!
The house red wine was amazing, and I don’t usually drink red wine. You can tell that the servers are genuinely passionate about wine and food, which made our experience a positive one. I will be back, to try one of their cooking courses.
