This IS the sweet retreat in Little Italy (Ottawa). Delicious desserts and coffee, the master baker and owner of PG is Joe Calabro- an award winning pastry chef. Hes competed, won awards, and represented Canada all over the world, including at the World Culinary Olympics in Frankfurt (1992), the World Banqueting competition in Ireland (1995), the Culinary Olympics in Berlin (1996) and most recently, Season 1 of Cake Walk on Slice TV. The gelato is delicious and flavorful! Meals are tasty, with my favorite being the soups and the aracini riso (Italian rice balls). Dont forget to take home a box of cannoli…the best!
Ive often walked by Pasticceria Gelateria but never took time to stop. I decided to try out their breakfast so I finally got a chance to visit.Pasticceria Gelateria is essentially a pastry shop that specializes in cakes, pastries, sorbet and gelato. They also have a coffee bar inside and they serve warm meals for both lunch and dinner to include pizza and pasta. When you walk in, you get the feel that the place is run with military precision. Everything is well organized and laid out. At first, you walk through the cake and pastries area. The display cases have a larger variety of enticing pastries that make you drool at first site. You then walk by the sorbet and gelato display cases and a seating area and finally you reach the coffee area with more seating available. My review is only for breakfast. I cant comment on anything else because I havent tried it.The order process is odd. I sat down and looked at the breakfast menu. I wanted a standard 2-egg breakfast with meat. Coffee is not included with your breakfast. You have to pay extra for drip coffee. Definitely not happy about that. When ready to order, you have to get up from your table, head over to the cash, order there and pay up front. When your coffee is ready, you have to go pick it up yourself from the bar. Not impressed. This whole do it yourself approach was rather annoying. When you pay after ordering, they hand you a stand with a number on it which is essentially your order number. You have to carry that thing back to your table. Even if you are the only customer, you still have to take the sign with you which makes no sense. You cant remember one order?I had a good laugh when I saw a customer refuse to take the sign with him.I found my breakfast to be expensive. It came to $10.70 and did not include coffee. Drip coffee was an added $2.50-3.00 or so. Crazy. The coffee was delicious though. It was no Folgers or Maxwell House. No wonder they charge extra. Good drip, I give them that. The eggs were well cooked, the toast was under-toasted but 99% of restaurants do the same, the potatoes, although cooked from frozen, were good and the sausage was too salty for me.Overall, the eggs and coffee were the winners along with the dcor.I wont be going back for breakfast. I will probably try the pastries, gelato and perhaps do lunch one day but as far as breakfast goes, it will not make my list. But I do respect and appreciate some aspects of Pasticceria Gelateria.
Best cannoli in Ottawa. It’s piped fresh, after you order, which means the filling is cool, smooth, and the biscuit isn’t soggy. It’s a nice light treat that isn’t too sweet.
