Amazing place for West Indian food up in Pickering. Cheap wings on Tuesday. I’ve had their garlic chicken, with veggie fried rice very spicy. Wings are a decent size. Serve is good as well as the crowd. Will be trying there jerk chicken and their chilli chicken next time. Goat curry was good as well.
First of all, one of the most awesome places to watch the NBA Finals if I’ve ever seen one. Every single TV was on the game and they have plenty of TV’s. You could hear the game sound and everyone there responded. The only reason that I didn’t give it a 5 is because the service wasn’t all that great. It could have just been a one-time deal, but our server constantly passed our table without refilling drinks. It got frustrating to constantly ask for refills two or three times before getting them.As for the food, the pepper shrimp appetizer was amazing! I’ve never experienced anything like it. It was the most enjoyable part of dinner. We also tried the jerk chicken and the jerk BBQ chicken. I’m not much for onions, so the jerk chicken didn’t do a whole lot for me although it was good. The BBQ was another story. The saucy taste with the meaty wings really made for an enjoyable experience.I’m only in town for four days, but I will definitely find my way back to Island Mix. The Long Island Iced Tea was awesome as well!
Disgusting and won’t be going back!. This was the worst experience in dining ever. I dined here two years ago and the food was great and the service was good. I decided to come back while visiting family in Ontario and the overal food and dining experience was terrible and I don’t see myself ever going back. We ordered a plate of plantains and it seemed like the plantain was previously fried then over cooked/reheated in the microwaved. The plantains were not eatible, they were rubbery, hard and tasteless. We also order the pepper calimary the calamari was not spicy at all and it was tasteless. The calamari tasted frozen like freezer burned and there was more batter than calamari. We also ordered doubles these too were also over cooked/reheated in the microwave we could not eat them because they were rubbery, greasy, hard and tasteless. The service is horrible we only saw our waitress when she dropped the menu and when she dropped the tab. sorry island mix I’m done, I won’t be going back.
Clean place- wait staff nasty attitude. The food is very sparing. So don’t go here and hope to eat to fulfill yourself- you will leave hungry.
Never go here on a weekend. They want to charge cover charge to eat at their restaurant, the woman who was at the hostess stand on May 17th was absolutely rude and disrespectful. No one wants to pay a 15$ cover charge on a Saturday night to sit down and eat a meal. Definitely do not recommend it, I would suggest going else where. This place is not worth the hassel.
Worst (wedding) experience EVER!. Those looking for a caterer for a wedding, birthday or other special occasion please read about our experience with Island Mix (Pickering location).We chose Island Mix to cater our wedding in May. While the food was great, there were a few things that were brought to our attention after the fact that (in our opinion) were unacceptable.1. In order to save on delivery costs for another event the following day, Island Mix brought them to our event. Highly unprofessional to piggyback off of our event and not even give us the heads-up. Not the end of the world just wouldve been nice for them to be more forthcoming with us.2. We were misled to believe that the service staff were that of Island Mix’s. We specifically asked about the wait staff in a one on one meeting with our contacts and they advised that it would be their staff serving food at our wedding. They were in fact, a 3rd party company called Catering Service Personnel. Had we known that a 3rd party company would be serving food at our event, we wouldve had the opportunity to research them further (reputation, references etc). Not a huge deal, right? Keep reading…3. SEVERAL guests witnessed the above mentioned service staff taking home Styrofoam containers with leftover food at the end of the night. Highly embarrassing for Wes and I to have to answer Why are the waiters taking home food before family When we mentioned this to our contact at Island Mix, we were advised that The staff was given the opportunity to eat, during their down time which was very brief. Whatever they didn’t finish, they did pack to take home. First of all, we had no issue with the wait staff eating during their down time at the wedding, but it was NEVER communicated to us that they would be taking food home at the end of the night. Second – the food was supposed to be packed up and left for US to deal with, not for the wait staff to help themselves. Finally – had it been one container that they packed and took home, thats one thing, but Im talking about 7-8 containers!!! Again, this was witnessed by our guests! We paid a lot of money for the food to feed OUR guests at our wedding not to farm feed the wait staff and their families.I originally wasnt going to post anything about our experience with them out of sheer embarrassment, but then I realized that I have nothing to be embarrassed about. I also wouldnt want any of my family or friends to have to go through this especially on your wedding day! Ive always been a fan of Island Mixs food but its a shame that this experience and their position on the above mentioned issues has tainted that forever.
Island mix food is really hit and miss. I ordered the polouri and it tasted like it had been fried in the fish oil. The Chowmein and rice, taste ok. But I have. Concerns when it comes to frying things like polouri and meat.
