Food was amazing. Staff was so friendly and knowledgeable. They explained everything we were eating. The dessert sounded strange to us at first, but we’re all so delicious!!! And the cocktails…drool. Try any with egg white, you won’t be disappointed. Will definitely be back.
If you’re looking for quality and creativity in your meal you definitely want to try Tomlin. The atmosphere is only second to its amazing menu! Enjoy a few cocktails and a couple small/large plates or go for the whole experience with a chef tasting. Prices are reasonable for the quality of the meal you receive. Really an amazing place, more than just dinner – it’s a whole experience.
This place exceeded my expectations! I was thrilled to see the Thunder Bay food scene so elevated, thanks to the crew @ Tomlin. Generous salad or fries portions with their Tuesday Burger special. Wide selection of craft beers & Ontario wines. Delicious and whimsical desserts keep you wanting more.
This was my first experience at Tomlin. It definitely won’t be the last. The inside is a mix of old and new with high ceilings and hardwood floors. We couldn’t decide what to have from the menu even after the waiter described what everything tasted like and how it was prepared. We opted for the tasting menu. I apologize for not getting pictures of the first two courses but when they came out we just dug in. The first course was the meat board. All made in house all excellent, from mortadella to summer sausage. Next was a board with some fried pork belly, falafels, fritters and fried head cheese. Whatever i say here does not do things justice, I mean the fried pork belly had home made apple butter, the falafels had a taziki that was mind blowing and it just goes on. Next was the pasta dishes, but so much more than home made pasta. Can you say duck confit? How about fresh mushroom with pillowy potato pieces and fresh greens? Hungry yet? Check this out, after that some meat dishes showed up. Not any meat how about the best pork tenderloin you have ever had. It is served with shrimp and little pasta balls ( I don’t remember what they were called but she told me twice) then there was the ribeye. Ah the ribeye, dry aged for 10, no 20 no 40 days! No! 45 Days! The most tender, most flavourful ribeye that melts in your mouth that I have found in Thunder Bay. And I am a beef lover. It comes with fire roasted vegetables, and creamy polenta. Then there was desert. A board with strawberry cake, chocolate with peanut butter and a spice cake. All awsome and the perfect ending. Its not cheep but well worth the money and experience.
By far best reasturant in Thunder Bay. This place is Amazing! Great atmosphere, perfect music, friendly efficient staff, mind blowing food orgasm. This restaurant has it figured out! Thank god, someone finally nailed it!
Something different. I recently visited this restaurant with my boyfriend and another couple. I was immediately impressed by the inside because although it’s similar to other restaurants here, it has a more contemporary feel. The staff was very nice and our waiter was very knowledgeable. Since it was our first time, he literally took us by the hand and explained everything on the menu and which drinks were best suited for each plate of food. He said all their food is prepared fresh, right down to the slices of meat they prepare themselves in the building. Our food was out quickly and when it was at the table, the waiter described the taste, texture, preparation process and ingredients in each plate of food. I have never been so impressed by restaurant service anywhere. I can’t wait to go back.
Best & Most interesting in TB. My partner and I were pleasantly surprised last night by this offering. We arrived early in terms of dining out standards as we had heard that Tomlin fills up quickly; with a reportedly no reservation policy you may have a wait if you come later. We were greeted promptly by a hostess despite the almost at capacity restaurant. Our only option for seating was at the bar; several tables were empty but we were informed that they were honouring old reservations…????.. Never the less, the bar proved to be a great option as we did not lack for attention or service by the bar staff. Local beers and Ontario wines abound on the menu; wonderful cocktail creations with homemade ingredients are present as well. A great variety of top quality liquor is available from vodka to whiskey. The dining concept is new to TB in that it consists of small and large plates for sharing I.e. Tapas. In this concept and the decor, Tomlin has a ‘sister’ restaurant in Shanghai called The Commune Social. Tomlin’s dishes take seasonal ingredients and give them an usual treatment or twist with wonderful flavours. What is sadly lacking are vegetarian options or a vegetarian menu; something The Commune Social does Tomlin one better. That being said we were able to dine on three outstanding dishes each separately focusing on: Cauliflower, Eggplant, and Gnocchi. The Eggplant dish was the most outstanding balancing the wonderful sweetness of local tomatoes with homemade ricotta and the zing of chili oil; it warranted a repeat! The Cauliflower treatment had a fresh and light avocado cream-based sauce. The Gnocchi dish consisted of homemade gnocchi cooked to perfection in a cream-style sauce with peas; it was our least favourite lacking an interesting or exciting flavour; to be fair it originally was to have contained Pancetta which probably would it have upped its game; perhaps a veggie option could have incorporated roasted garlic. Tomlin has its own pastry chef and it shows in its dessert offerings which are not to be missed. We sampled the Chocolate Terrine and a Squash & Pumpkin tart with Cardomom whipped cream. The Terrine is by far the best dessert we have sampled in TB. Tomlin has decided to keep the local theme even in their coffee opting for using beans from St. Paul’s and using the Chemex pour over system. Something thus far unheard of in TB. All in all Tomlin is a very welcome addition to TB with creativity and quality being at the center point.
