2017/05/04Cafe Landwer was a pleasant surprise. We went there for dinner on a Friday evening, and the restaurant was filling up quickly, but we were able to be seated immediately. Even though the restaurant is fairly new, the decor has a nice retro vibe, from the checkered tile floor, to the abundance of wood furnishings, black and white photos on the walls, and the big logo on the tiled wall, proclaiming quality coffee since 1919. The menu was fairly extensive, with lots of breakfast and lunch choices, but we stuck to the entree section for dinner. SWMBO chose the Landwers Famous Schnitzel, which came with one side, and she picked the Landwers Rice. The schnitzel was made with two pieces of plump, free-range chicken breast, breaded and deep-fried. While other restaurants serving schnitzel usually pound the chicken flat to tendarize it and speed up the cooking process, Landwer does not. The chicken was tender and was not dried out. The breading was nice and crisp. The rice was flavoured with little bits of carrots, almonds and caramelized onions. Flavours were good, but SWMBO did note that the chicken could have used some kind of dipping sauce, and for $18, probably could have included a small salad. I opted for the Sinia Kebab, which was also $18, but came with a Chopped Salad (cucumbers, tomatoes, light vinaigrette). The main dish came with small, ground beef kebabs, a single, large, charbroiled eggplant, tomatoes, chickpeas and onions, all atop a fresh-baked focaccia that looked like a pita. The whole thing was served inside a deep skillet, which made it a bit awkward getting at the whole eggplant. However, it tasted great. Service was pleasant and polite.

Have been to this place twice. After the first time was going to give it 4 stars, because of some issues with service. After this Sunday breakfast I’m giving it 2. We were a group of 6. They gave us a table and nobody came over to us for 15 min. I expect that for breakfast they at least serve coffee immediately. I tried to catch a server, but couldn’t. Finally annoyed server came over and rushed us through our order. When we got the food no one came over even once! I had to ask them for coffee refill myself. Very poor service and they were not even full. The coffee is horrible, I mean worth then Tim Hortons, very sour. However great latte. Food is very good, but I won’t come back because of terrible service. I think in today’s world of reviews restaurants have to do a way better management.
