Do you have a bubble tea craving?. When you only have the bus as transportation and a craving for bubble tea, this is the place I would go. I can take the viva blue and get off at the Weldrick stop. Personally, I prefer drinks that have a stronger tea taste, like the ones at Ten Rens. I would say this is one of my favourites in uptown Richmond Hill (north of HWY 7). I usually get the taro slush with tapioca. There’s enough flavour and tea. This place also serves Japanese fast food (probably because it was a Teriyaki before). Spring rolls are good and crispy. Still have yet to try their teriyaki and noodles. The place is lacking real decor but is a good place to sit because there are a few arm chairs.
Who is J?. E: J’s Cafe is a new cafe taking the place of Teriyaki Experience on Yonge & Weldrick. It is an oddball establishment advertising bubble tea, smoothies, noodle and meat as well as sushi dishes. The restaurant’s menu items are limited, but cover all the essentials of each section of the menu. In the heat of Toronto I had a Taro Milk ($3.39) upgraded to a Slushie (another $0.99) and it was fresh and refreshing. It was tasty and full of flavour, but it naturally tasted watered down at the end owing to the ice melting. The cook was making a rice and chicken and noodle and onion bowl and it looked hefty and desirable.-A: The space is large as it was a branch of the aforementioned franchise. It was cool too, which is a bonus for the summer. There are several tables, a counter, stools and tables. The centrepiece of the food preparation area is a teppan grill likely inherited from the older business. There is a TV on the wall, but not aimed at the diners, but at the front presumably for those who are taking food out (like the ever labouring Sisyphus). The sole diner (who was having the rice and chicken and noodle and onion bowl – yeah that one) was missing out on Brazil getting beaten by The Netherlands via a penalty mere minutes into the game. Poor Brazil; conned into hosting the corporate games the suckers.-T: One afternoon customer and mythology’s very own Sisyphus and there was a wait of five minutes. It does look like they might get backed up should more customers come in however; the sole employee was working orders one at a time and would easily become overwhelmed. A woman walked in from across the street and opined that she is there every day and the food is great. She was friendly and enthusiastic, but I admit I did wonder because ten seconds earlier she was greeting the cook in a friendly fashion and telling him not to make my order too sweet. Hmmm…Parking is scarce in the plaza, but what else is new?-S: The employee was friendly and was acting as an order taker, cook and waiter too. He noted that with the day’s receipt one gets 10% off on the next order.Teriyaki Experience was not successful in the location so whether this place will last is suspect. This cafe has the same telephone number as the one it replaced. Could it be the same staff? The bubble tea-cum-noodles-cum-sushi is odd and the area has no foot traffic. Moreover, J’s Cafe is open and closed at irregular hours so is not organised enough to bestow confidence on diners so far.One wishes the business good luck, but stick to what you know and leave Japanese food to Japanese people. Stick to bubble tea, noodles, non-Japanese meat dishes, etc.
