We were really happy when Marathon opened a location closer to us. I do, however, prefer the taste of the original location. One of the owners won Hong Kongs international milk tea competition in 2012. I actually prefer their yin yang (milk tea and coffee mixed drink). I’ve noticed over the past few years that their tea seems to be less strongly brewed, although it’s still the lightest and smoothest in texture and mouth feel that I’ve found so far in Toronto. cookingwithalison.com
My last visit was almost 2 years ago. At that time it was not that busy. Their Hong Kong style milk tea is very famous. They were the king of milk tea a few years ago. However, it’s not as good as we have in Hong Kong. And they do not serve it in ceramic cups. Paper cup cannot really reveal the best taste of milk tea. Just like coffee. The bun with crispy crust is okay. It takes a while for the staff to place the food on the table coz they have to look for the customer. The do have a number for the order but the number tent card is so small. The staff won’t able to see it. They shout out the number but do not really look at the customer.
Interesting concept: you order in the front and pay and then find a spot. They then bring the food to your table. Concept is similar to food court or Nando’s Chicken. We ordered a baked pork chop rice in tomato sauce and a sizzling plate of chicken in black pepper sauce. It tasted not bad. I felt that the price was too high for the quality of food and service provided. It gets quite busy on a Saturday during lunchtime making it hard to find seats.
I’ve been here a few times for afternoon tea and it always hits the spot. Although the food is nothing spectacular, it is affordable and the options are endless. It really embodies the vibe of similar cafes in Hong Kong (thus my parents like it too). Of course, can’t not talk about the milk tea here. I know of many who are obsessed with them and always crave a cup in their hands. I personally find it a little too rich and milky; I prefer my milk tea with a stronger tea flavour and less evaporated milk than those served at Marathon.
I came here with a couple of friends after having a large meal close by. The Timmies in the area was full and did not look very cozy. This was the next best option. We all ordered their famous Hong Kong style milk tea. This place has won the award for best Hong Kong milk tea in Hong Kong. They have the photos and awards to prove it! They also have other breakfast, lunch, and other snack type of items on their menu. Their hours of business are 6:30am to 10:00pm. Even though we got there late, the owner still let us enjoy our drink past 10:00pm. The milk tea was excellent as always. Our friends were discussing when we would try their breakfast menu here in the morning.
Since I was nearby, I decided to come and order Hong Kong style milk tea since I’ve been seeing it on instagram for a while now.The milk tea was thick and smooth with a strong tea flavour. It was good for the milk tea that I’ve had outside. I still think my grandma makes the best milk tea though!
So bad. Never got my breakfast….. Staff was very ignorant and unhelpful.
