There are some things that sushi places do that just drive me round the bend. This one here had two problems, big ones. Sadly this means that we will never return here to see what else they do well and you should avoid this place too. So, here are the gory details for those of you interested, yes, I will also post the good ones. The menus came with a photo album of their work. A nice touch but when I flipped on over to the California Roll I noticed the bane of my existence: Julienned Cucumber Skins. Those of you who follow my restaurant rants will remember the Kitchener sushi place that did the same thing. My heart sank and I ordered them anyway just to make sure. As feared, they arrived with a smaller amount of those flavourless tough bits of plant matter tucked in beside the Avocado, Crab and a thin vein of Tobiko. For those of you who have not read my previous thoughts on this, here is the condensed version: Cucumbers, in California Rolls are intended to provide a crisp coolness and flavour that the skins just do not have. They are tough, flavourless husks that dominate the dish in an completely unpleasant way. These are the things that I usually toss in the wet garbage ready for the composter, yet here they are in the California Roll of a somewhat expensive restaurant. I have pictures, I will share. The other thing that arrived that was inedible was the free Miso Soup. When it arrived I noticed a foul medicinal odor. I had a sniff of the bowl of soup and was assaulted by the bad smell. I had my son smell it and he thought that they may have used Uni in the soup broth. I tasted a little of it and it just tasted off, it did not taste like the Miso Soup I am used to (and I do make this at home too… yes, from scratch). I asked our waiter if the soup contained Uni and there was none. The soup was off, way way off. We returned it, untouched. The Volcano Roll came to the table on fire. Amazing presentation. Epic fail on the amount of sauce on the thing though. They are very large sushi, you cannot use chopsticks and have the thing arrive safely in your mouth. You need to use your hands, which got very very messy. The flavour was good even through all the mess and Kyle commented that the rice, which had been deep fried seemed to be a tad overcooked. I did not mind this one.The things that they excelled at: Tempura Unagi. Never have I seen this offered, pity I will not be going back. This was good. As was the Soft Shell Crab. I finished off the meal with an appetizer of 10 pieces of Salmon Sashimi. When you consider that I can get an entire pound of Sashimi Grade Salmon all cut and nicely displayed at my local Senbazuru for $16, $14 for this piece seemed a tad steep.Unfortunately, what they did well did not overshadow what they failed at. I will never return here, you should avoid it.
