This place has the best pies i have ever had. The pastry is different…it’s difficult to get a pastry this delicate yet strong enough to hold together with the creamy fillings and they have this balance perfectly. All the fillings we have tried are all over the top delicious, even the more adventurous ones which we have now started exploring …
I had high expectations for this place being a Kiwi and all, but left disappointed. The filing of the steak and kidney pie was great and the ice coffee was good, but the pastry on the pie was just weird. It was like bread. The custard square pastry was also not good, like it was under cooked and the custard on the square was all jelly like. The flat white was just bad…weak and milky.
I was killing time waiting for a meeting so I decided to peruse Roncesvalles Avenue hunting for a quick bite and stumbled across Wiley’s. The sign invited me to try a flat white and a crust coded pie. I’m a sucker for a good chicken pastry so I was in but I went for an americano instead of the flat white since I expected I’d get more than enough calories in the form of pastry. There was a woman with a small child in front of me. He was dying to get upstairs but the protective mom kept saying no. I thought nothing of it until the quirky lady behind the counter directed me to the one seat by the window instead of allowing me up the stairs. Perhaps I read into it too much or maybe there was a secret meeting of the Fraternal Order of Kiwis going on but I sat at the window and enjoyed the view. The coffee was good and the pie was even better. It was easy to hold in one hand without the need for utensils. It was creamy, chunky and well seasoned. One of the desserts in the case caught my eye. I asked quirky girl and was told it was a Lamington which is a down under cake covered with coconut. I think I was intrigued by the fact it reminded me of the Vachon Billet logs I used to get as a lunchtime treat on occasion. I guess the pink neon colour is hard to forget. Nostalgia always makes thins taste better and this was no exception. It was light and moist and on the sweet side.It was light and moist and on the sweet side and made me feel like a kid again. I may go back to either try the flat white, relive my childhood again or further decipher their pie top code. More than anything though, I may go back to find what the hell is up those stairs. fareeatales.com
Picked up 2 steak and 2 steak and mushroom pies for dinner tonight to give Wisey’s a try. They were tasty but mostly gravy filler and very little beef, pastry was light but not very flavourful. If I lived I the area I would try them again but since I don’t I would not make a special trip for them. I do however make special trips to The Pie Commission on the queensway , a little more expensive but butter flake pastry and substantially more beef in the pie!
If anyone is in the mood for delicious pies – meat or fruit, you have try this place out! Pies are extremely popular in Australia and New Zealand however in New Zealand, meat pies are their national dish. Apparently McDonald’s in NZ have them on their menu!I purchased a few pies to sample for my team at work. I chose the:Breakfast Pie – bacon, eggButter ChickenChicken and MushroomSteak, Bacon, CheesePotato-topped and SteakAll of them were incredibly meaty and flavourful. The crust was tender, flakey (like buttery shards) and wasn’t soggy from the filing. Most of all, they felt really light although they weighed about a pound each :)I will definitely be back to try their fruit pies. The service was also super friendly. Great neighborhood spot.
