Nachos. Big and dirty.
Close to the office. Really, I’m pretty confident the only reason anyone goes to the grad club is because it’s only a five minute walk from their office and it’s better than staring at a blank computer screen, willing your dissertation into existence. The beer selection is decent, and they usually have a couple taps that change on a regular basis. Prices are comparable to anywhere else in London, maybe a titch cheaper, and they often have good deals on beer, if you’re willing to buy in quantity. The service vacillates between surly and friendly-surly, but in a strangely pleasant sort of way. And the patio’s respectable, the only drawbacks being that it doesn’t really get any sun, gets a bit buggy on summer nights and you can’t smoke on it (which I guess might be a plus if you’re a non-smoker.)All that being said, the food generally takes the proverbial shit-cake. Other reviewers have already gone into detail, but it’s just generally low-quality prepared with little apparent interest. Lots of frying, lots of stuff that tastes like it came out of the freezer, etc. It’s like they figure they have a largely captive clientele ( there’s only one other bar on campus, and it’s largely populated by undergrads – !) and they’ll have to eat at some point, so they don’t even bother. If you’re desperate, just get some fries. Or follow the honoured tradition of buying a couple bags of chips at the bar, splitting them down the seams and sticking them in the middle of the table – boom, dinner.
Good Beer, Garbage Food. The Grad Club is a time honoured tradition for graduate students at Western. The staff are friendly, there is plenty of seating, and a good outside patio. The beer selection is above average, with some beauty brews on tap always, and some interesting ones on rotation throughout the year. For all the good the Grad Club has going for it, the food just tanks it. Straight up gross. Nacho platters are usually left half eaten – not because of their size, but because of the frigid cheese, stale chips, and clumps of bland beef or chicken. Their pasta sauce is a colour I’ve never quite seen… way too orange for comfort. Without a doubt, the majority of the food comes out microwaved. Problems lie with ingredients and preparation. If the Grad Club wants to keep customers from going to other food options on Campus (The Wave is much better), they need to make better food. Simple.
